setting screen correctly on startup for notebook

I have a Sony Vaio T13. A while back, when the notebook started up, the screen would default to HDMI, VGA, and the the LCD, in that order.

For a long time now, since the 4.4 kernel I think, the LCD screen is always the default, regardless of any external screens plugged in, and even when the notebook is closed.

It's great that xrandr can fix this after starting X, but is there some way to force one of the external screens to display when plugged in? I haven't been able to figure this out. Any help would be appreciated.
