Just started LXQt after a long time again.

You're missing lxqt-qtplugin

That's it. Don't know why it was missing.
Still black desktop background. Anyway, thanks again.

Update: The "Desktop" setting is only available if pcmanfm is installed. (and working after login/logout)
Because it totally makes sense: If you want to set the desktop wallpaper, you have to install a file manager...

wgnm : that's because pcmanfm is and always has been the core component of LX* .
It takes care of auto-mounting , desktop icons, desktop background and probably other things other DEs use separate programs for.
If you don't want pcmanfm installed, use something like feh to get a desktop background.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Thanks for the hint but having pcmanfm installed is totally fine.
It's just extremely frustrating when the DE has a major missing feature and the solution is to install a package ("pacmanfm-qt", "pcmanfm" was already installed) which neither has a useful package description nor is listed as (optional) dependency by any other LXQt package.
I have to spend too much time to get simple things working...

Arch wiki does state that installing lxqt group is the correct way to install lxqt, that would have brought in pcmanfm-qt .
The way lxqt works a (probably valid) claim could be made that pcmanfm-qt is what makes lxqt a desktop environment instead of a bunch of programs.

Well, you first have to know that packages belonging to one group can have major feature dependency even if not mentioned in package description or package dependencies.
Now I know and I'm a bit smarter.
