[SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

I just upgraded to the latest Thunderbird 52.0-1 this morning from the official repositories. However, the latest version of Lightning calendar 4.7.6 doesn't work with it. I tried downloading the Lightning beta 5.4b4, which should theoretically support Thunderbird 52, but this failed to install after

The binary component required for Lightning could not be loaded, likely because the wrong version combination is being used. You currently have Lightning 5.4b4 installed, but should be using a version from the 5.4 series.

I read that Thunderbird potentially bundles Lightning now, so I modified its PKGBUILD to include the following line in .mozconfig.

ac_add_options --enable-calendar

However, after installing, there was still no option for the calendar. I didn't try installing any of the Lightning "Development snapshots".

Is there a way to use the latest Thunderbird with a stable version of Lightning calendar?

Have you tried to install it with Thunderbird's Add-ons-Manager?

Yes. That's the only way I installed it as an add-on.

Ah, I didn't notice that it's marked as 'not available for Thunderbird 52.0' in the Add-ons-Manager. Sorry..

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

I tried changing maxVersion in install.rdf to 53 since it usually lets me run out of date addons, and Lighting does turn on but its completly broken.
Quite alot of stuff had to change in Thunderbird52 so i bet it will take a while to update Lightning now.

Thanks for checking Midov. Usually Lightning seems to update in tandem with Thunderbird, so I was a bit surprised this time. I guess I'll just pin Thunderbird for now. sad

Just downgrade thunderbird until Lightning gets a stable version, compatible with Thunderbird 52. I also tried to install the beta for the corresponding version, but it resulted in a broken rendered window (very zoomed and blurred).

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

This is the main reason I abandoned Thunderbird for kmail/korganizer.  Historically, this seems to happen quite often on major releases, and it can take up to a week for Lightning to catch up.  At least with the KDE suite my calendar never breaks on upgrade.

Lightning never broke for me on previous major releases; this is absolutely the first time since years.

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

Before switching to arch this last November, I used Thunderbird on windows for a decade, and Lightning not working after updates was a very common occurrence over the years.  Same with enigmail for gpg.

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

I am no expert about Mozilla's decisions, but didn't they basically started to bundle together thunderbird and lightning?
And now a new TB version breaks lightning support?
Am I missing something?

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

According to this (outdated) status page

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/doc … r_Versions

we must wait for Lightning 5.4. It seems they are actively working on it, so evidently something went wrong in the Thunderbird release process.

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

Yes, I don't remember Lightning breaking for me in several years either.

I used to use korganiser too, which I agree is a very slick program. However, there are just too many moderately-sized issues for me to go back to it. For example, a regression preventing configuration of the first day of the week meant I missed several appointments. The time was elided so you couldn't see what you were selecting in the drop-down. Dragging new events in the AM would be created in the PM. Events ending at midnight were shown 24 hours late. And it was quite laggy for me. I consistently logged bugs, but got no response from the devs… so went back to Lightning.

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

I've installed Thunderbird beta from AUR[1] and Lightning from [2] and it's working again.

Tried first the latest candidate of 5.4, but it doesn't work...

Thanks for that! I wonder though, why is the separate Lightning add-on still needed when the PKGBUILD contains --enable-calendar?

Because it does not package "src/thunderbird-52.0/obj-x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/dist/xpi-stage/lightning-5.4.en-US.linux-x86_64.xpi" ?
Edit:
Seems not to be needed see post #19

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

From this post it looks like upstream is moving towards Lightning being pre-packaged in Thunderbird.

bjo wrote:

What specifically did you do? I tried adding it to the .mozconfig section of the PKGBUILD. i.e.

--- PKGBUILD.orig	2017-04-08 09:32:44.313816028 +1000
+++ PKGBUILD	2017-04-08 09:33:33.693667716 +1000
@@ -92,6 +92,7 @@
 ac_add_options --disable-crashreporter
 ac_add_options --enable-alsa
 ac_add_options --disable-updater
+ac_add_options --enable-calendar

 STRIP_FLAGS="--strip-debug"
 END

But this didn't seem to work. There was nothing in the add-on section or the menu of Thunderbird. Also, it took ages to build at 100% CPU. I wonder if the official Arch maintainers would consider building it with Lightning enabled. Also, when you built it, what version did Lightning report itself as? I'm wondering if the separate builds that @figue mentioned are the same.

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

@Salkay create a new profile and it should be there

$ thunderbird -P

If that works copy {e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} from .thunderbird/newprofile/extensions to .thunderbird/oldprofile/extensions
On restart thunderbird should warn that another program has added an addon allow it then lightning should be in the old profile
Delete the new profile to tidy up.

@Salkay I can confirm that this works, I did not have to create an additional profile either.

Re: [SOLVED] No Lightning calendar for Thunderbird 52.0-1

Hm, I tried building it again and it works perfectly now without even creating an additional profile or anything more than restarting. I'm not sure why it failed originally. The Lightning version is listed as 5.4. It doesn't say anything about a beta, but I guess it might be.

The package is also only 38 M for TB + Lightning vs. 36 M for vanilla TB, so maybe the Arch maintainers will look favourably on including it in the official package. I don't have time right now, but I'll look to creating a bug report in the next few days, unless anyone could (please) do it first. Cheers.

Hmmm. Just installed the latest package (52.0-2), -removed lightning from the add ons just in case- restarted it and have no calendar options.

Did the same thing as you but I have a calendar option and now it works fine. Though I had installed beta version of lightning before. Anybody know what version of the google provider data works with Thunderbird 52. Version 3.1 only goes up to 50?
