Xorg 1.19 vboxvideo_drv.so has removed(https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/comm … virtualbox), but Xorg want load it always. So my problem is HW acceleration doesn't work.

Re: Xorg Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)

Is there a real problem? Apparently the modesetting DDX works fine?

Re: Xorg Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)

eshizhan, i guess you don't have HW acceleration but evertything does work ?

There has been another thread with  a similar problem.
it's unsolved but the problem cause appeared to be with the windows host part.

Verify if Vbox HW accelaration for this linux guest is enabled on your windows system.

Re: Xorg Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)

Yeah, the problem is HW acceleration doesn't work. The same problem in my MBR(macOS 10.12.4).
I got the same result while I try disable or enable 3D acceleration. And direct rendering always Yes, but in fact HW acceleration doesn't work. The glxgeas is low FPS with host higt CPU.

➜ ~ glxinfo | grep -iP 'opengl | rendering'

Re: Xorg Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)

Direct rendering stopped being related to hw acceleration years ago.

The xorg log shows X uses modesetting driver

OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.9, 256 bits)

That tells us mesa uses the software fallback driver llvmpipe .

Maybe you could use vmware instead of virtualbox ?
I do have the impression vmware has good linux guest support .
(in-kernel modules and an xf86-video-vmware driver)

Re: Xorg Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)

I try install Guest Additions CD image from VBox, renderer string become Chromium, but glxgears running with black screen and UI freeze.

Re: Xorg Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)

So basically virtualbox X11Guest3D support is not in good shape, especially when running a linux guest on windows host.

Some options you got :

try other virtualization software on the host , vmware seems most promising .
they have free-for-personal-use versions, and vast majority of their linux guest stuff is opensource and integrated with kernel / mesa / X etc.

A Dual-booting setup with allows to run both windows and linux natively.

switch to an arch linux host and make windows the guest system.
If you have 2 videocards (integrated plus discrete will work) , pci passthrough can be used to give windows a real videocard.
