[solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

I'm trying to connect a TV to my laptop, but unfortunately some part of the border is cut.
The output from xrandr is

As it seems that laptop gets EDID and similar data right, perhaps is it just a matter of configuring xrandr?
Can anyone instruct me what parameteres I should input, if I want resolution of 1920x1080?

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

Well truth is many TVs does overscan themselves and even have it enabled by default. So you should probably check the settings on the TV.

...
HDMI-2 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 760mm x 450mm
   1360x768 60.02 +
   1920x1080 60.00 50.00 59.94 24.00 23.98
   1920x1080i 60.00* 50.00 59.94
...

The current mode (*) the TV is on is 1080i60. If you want for example 1080p60, you can do

xrandr --output HDMI-2 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 60

Though the TV has its preferred/optimal mode at 1360x768@60Hz (+).

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

I understand basic commands, and also that I may try underscan option of xrandr, but as verbose lists many more options than what is in plain xrandr, I was hoping one of them would work without further hustle, however I don't know how to translate it to create a new entry for xranrd. (Of course I'm interested in 1080.)

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

What verbose lists are just the same modes (resolution@refresh rate) as those listed in "plain" but in details. If you really suspect that these modes are not precisely correct for your TV, you need to create custom modelines instead.

But again, I don't think it's what you should dwell into, but really just pick up the remote control and look for the overscan option on the TV...

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

I will try that, but what makes me suspicious is that with same laptop/tv and windows I had no such problem. If I want to manually set the underscan in xrandr, can you please write an example of such command, assuming it is safe to do so?

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

Well, you didn't mention that overscan did not happen in Windows. Though it could be in Windows the driver is doing underscan (unlikely unless explicit configured though).

I have no experience setting underscan anyway, you may want to check out the man page of xrandr. And yes it is safe, xrandr effects are volatile, so in the worse case you type reboot and press enter, then you'll be fine again. (Obviously, if you want them to be persistent, you need to have the commands in certain X startup script, depending on your DE / how you start X)

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

Ok, so here's the problem: either with Windows, or using Linux and resolution 1360x768, I get no overscan; however, in Linux and 1080 the problem is there. There is no option to turn it off in the TV menu, and if I issue

xrandr --output HDMI-2 --set underscan on

I get

X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
Serial number of failed request: 38
Current serial number in output stream: 38

Any hint or suggestions?

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

It's possible/likely that your TV have "smart" strategy on overscan instead of an option, that is, it assume you don't want it when use it as a computer screen (1360x768), but do want it when it is used as a TV/movie screen (1920x1080). Silly CEA/VESA resolution "categorization".

Okay, back to xrandr. Are you using the modesetting DDX (no xf86-video-* installed) or otherwise? Your xorg log (~/.local/share/xorg/) can be helpful on this.

Apparently you need to specify parameters for it:

I think your intuition is correct: I checked back at Windows, and no resolution can be chosen, so I assume it is 768, which works fine in Linux as well. Moreover, the TV documents say that PC can only be connected through VGA at 768 (crappy TV!), and no overscan/underscan option can be tuned, which in fact is not advertised with the EDID in verbose output of xrandr. So I guess I'm not facing a real 'problem' here, as everything woks as expected; the only curiosity at this point is whether I can trick it to be used with PC at 1080 without correcting the borders.

I don't fully understand your last question, but pacman -Q gives these

xf86-input-evdev 2.10.5-1
xf86-input-libinput 0.25.0-1
xf86vidmodeproto 2.3.1-3

and I have two such files, the first

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

Have you tried setting underscan with xrandr in the form showed in the link I posted? Setting h/vborder for it?

If yes but still failed, you can try to install xf86-video-intel and see if it helps. Take your own risk though since it is sort of recommended that you should use the builtin vendor-neutral xorg driver (a.k.a. modesetting DDX) instead of a vendor-specific one, especially when your gfx vendor is intel, so there can be side effects. Nevertheless since the modesetting DDX is relatively new, it may not support as many xrandr feature or so as the vendor-specific ones.

P.S. restart X after the installation for the newly-installed driver to take its place

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

Maybe I will try xf86-video-intel but regarding the link you posted, isn't it suggesting to do

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set underscan on --set "underscan vborder" 25 --set "underscan hborder" 40

or is it something different that you mean? if so, I was planning to do it in two steps, first underscan on and then v/h borders, but already the first step failed as I posted; I will also try the two steps together but I suspect it will fail again.

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

This whole behaviour is because that's the raw resolution of the TV's panel, right? It is a 1360x768 resolution panel, and a 1080p picture is transformed by the TV and has blurry pixels? If that's how it is, you could instead do that transformation on the GPU instead of the TV. You would have 1080p on your desktop and the TV would see it as 1360x768. You do this:

xrandr --output HDMI-2 --mode 1360x768 --scale-from 1920x1080

You can do it in separate steps as well:

xrandr --output HDMI-2 --mode 1360x768
xrandr --output HDMI-2 --scale-from 1920x1080

It won't forget the scaling transformation when you change modes, so you need to mention "--scale 1x1" while you switch modes around to compare:

xrandr --output HDMI-2 --mode 1360x768 --scale-from 1920x1080
xrandr --output HDMI-2 --mode 1920x1080 --scale 1x1

I don't know how to turn this into an X config.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will try it as well. I don't know how to check that the tv is is 1360x768 though, and more than blurry pixels it is borders cut off, but you may have a point: the scale-from basically will trick it into thinking it is 768 even though it actually is 1080, right?

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

The way I understood it, the GPU's framebuffer for the monitor will be 1920x1080. The GPU then transforms this picture into 1360x768 when sending it to the TV. For your programs running on the computer it is 1920x1080, and for the TV it is 1360x768.

Just to understand, will it improve quality of say watching a video with this trick on the tv, as opposed to just using 768? I ask because I think the TV is capable of displaying 1080.

Well I am just unsure whether you can do it in a two step way (e.g . what if it does not have fallback h/vborder values).

Not really. The only point to use scale-from is that, you want everything in your UI to look smaller. This is the same case for --mode 1920x1080 if your TV panel is 1360x768. It's just scale-from might do a slighty better job at the downsacling than your TV.

The only chance that you can get better video quality is to use --mode 1920x1080, that said, only when your TV panel is 1920x1080. However, it is more likely the panel is 1360x768, since it is the preferred resolution in the EDID _of the HDMI port_. The 720/1080 resolutions exist probably just for CEA compatibility (i.e. to work with things like Bluray Players). In that case you get best video quality with --mode 1360x768. Video player programs will pretty much always do a much better job in downscaling the videos to the panel resolution than the TV itself.

P.S. Truth is you almost never get a resolution like 1360x768 in the EDID of an HDMI port if it is not the panel resolution, since it's neither proper CEA or VESA resolution, but more like a compromised one in between (1024x768 is VESA, and only CEA does 16:9, but it has only HD/FHD/4K UHD, i.e 720/1080/2160).

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

The command in one step only does produce a similar error. Given the model and producer (Proscan, plded3273a), is there a simple way to tell whether the panel is as you say? in such case, I guess it is pointless to try to force a 1080 anyway for my purposes, but should it still be called HDTV, if it just takes HD signal and degrades it to fit its panel? is it common practice? anyway, thanks for your suggestions.

A quick search gives me sources like amazon and cnet which lists its resolution to be 1366x768.

Pretty much. Precisely HD does not refer to 1920x1080 but 1280x720 (while FHD does). And 1360x768 is higher in any sense than 1280x720 and it is more or less 16:9. Although it is not precisely what HD (1280x720) is, it is yet the most common case for so called HDTV or 720p TV. (I wonder how many "true 720p" panels ever existed.)

FWIW, there is nothing wrong/bad/deceitful for it to be able to accept 1080p signals, since it allows maximum compatibility, just in case your Bluray Players or so is not even capable of downscaling 1080p sources to 720p, not to mention the non-standard 1360x768. That said, it should be able to accept 720p signal as well, so there will not be an ugly upscaled-then-downscaled process when the source is 720p.

Here is an interesting quote from the Wikipedia:

In 2006, 1366×768 was the most popular resolution for liquid crystal display televisions (versus XGA for Plasma TVs flat panel displays); by 2013, even this was relegated to only being used in smaller or cheaper displays (e.g. "bedroom" LCD TVs, or low-cost, large-format plasmas), cheaper laptop and mobile tablet computers, and midrange home cinema projectors, having otherwise been overtaken by higher "full HD" resolutions such as 1920×1080.

The paragragh is also followed by a section of 1360x768, which explains its relationship with 1366x768.

Re: [solved] xrandr external monitor: possible overscan

I'd guess best quality for video, you'd get by using a 1360x768 desktop on that monitor without any transformation, meaning the default "--scale 1x1" where desktop stuff looks very large on a TV. The video player will do the transformation and nothing else will touch the pixels: the GPU does nothing to the picture because of the "--scale 1x1", and the electronics in the TV also just hands what it gets from the GPU to the panel's real pixels because the real panel is 1360x768.

For video, you probably won't be able to perceive a difference. Videos don't do sharp graphics like what's happening with PC graphics and this will hide the difference between "--mode 1360x768 --scale-from 1920x1080" and "--mode 1360x768 --scale 1x1". This should then mean you can use whatever scaling you like best for your desktop, and won't have to worry about videos.

About how to find out if the panel is really 1360x768, I'd set "xrandr --output HDMI-2 --mode 1360x768 --scale 1x1", then look very closely at things that are "pixel graphics", like look very closely at the mouse pointer graphics, or look up "pixel art" graphics on Google and inspect the pictures you'll find there. If you look very closely, it should be obvious if pixels in the pictures are the real, physical pixels of the display, or fake and blurry because physical pixels of the panel are blended into the neighbouring panel pixels. You also have your laptop panel to compare.
