Re: Problem with Gnome and D-Bus

Are you using gdm? If not you have to manually start a dbus session with gnome .

Umm... Garnome would not solve a simple problem like not starting dbus.

It because /etc is /home/<user>/garnome/etc, /var is also /home/<user>/garnome/var,
Default /etc/rc.d/hal or /etc/rc.d/dbus guess it's dir is /usr/bin/ or something.

This can be changed by modifying the some configuration of Garnome,
or changing default install dir(/home/<user_account>/garnome) to /usr.
(NOTE: this is NOT recommended if you are using stock gnome from the distro, i did installed arch linux console only, and installed the garnome lately, i will try garnomized-Xorg-7.1 myself)

BUT, it really weird, because i didn't even started dbus or hal, but my firefox or epiphany works fine for me.

Re: Problem with Gnome and D-Bus

user: garnome is entirely irrelevant here, please stop promoting methods that are offtopic and unsupported.

the issue here is not the system wide message bus, launched in /etc/rc.d/dbus, but the session message bus, which, if you use xinitrc, is not started by default. If you use garnome and xinitrc, it's still not going to start a session bus, so that is not a solution.

anyway, "man dbus-launch" has a range of different ways to start a session dbus from your xinitrc, use whatever you find useful.

It is supported by gnome-ppl.
I wonder when archlinux adopt the gnome by it's default desktop?

I chose the garnome, because there is no one care about my desktop. All by myself is not bad at all as it seems look.
(For example, Xorg suck a ball now)

Re: Problem with Gnome and D-Bus

then you should go to the gnome forums and promote it.
if archlinxu would drop gnome it would be another story, JGC and i work hard to give you guys a complete gnome and resolve bugs in gnome and kick patches upstream.
Arch will never have one default desktop, not kde not gnome not fluxbox.
All are equal, and what "sucks a ball" about xorg ?

1>then i can't promote garnome on this forum??

2>You don't have to, garnome2.14.2.1(481kb) download the patches and patch it automatically, just change install dir to /usr
(ONLY if you are using console-linux who want gnome a try). of course there is need small arch related patch.(in my experience 0)

2-1>Well said, so choice is the each one's freedom.
and this category isn't arch, this is Desktop Environments,
i installed arch, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEANS I SHOULD USE gnome FROM ARCH!!!

ARCH != gnome

Re: Problem with Gnome and D-Bus

yeah you can, but not as a solution to gnome related problem in arch. cause this doesn't resolve anything.

eh, i haven't got a clue what this means, putting patches upstream means they will get include in gargnome and upstream releases. i only tried to say we put a lot of our free time in gnome for arch.

agreed, but again then we won't support your desktop.

ARCH != gnome

ah bugs.archlinux.org wink so it can be fixed.

Re: Problem with Gnome and D-Bus

To answer the original question:

in your rc.conf file make sure that avahi-daemon is before dbus.  As well, in your .xinitrc file use:

exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session gnome-session

to start your gnome desktop and all is well.
