Logs for when a login fails

I had an issue today when setting up Arch Linux for the first time because when I created a user, I didn't tell it to create the home folder.

I had a lot of issues debugging this because it logged in fine on the console, but it would not log in to the Gnome desktop.

When I tried to log into Gnome, it would instantly dump me to the login screen again with no error.

I tried several places that I thought might have logs for this, but nothing was showing up any errors.

Does anyone know where I would find log files that would have helped me find what was wrong more quickly?

Thanks!
