GDM Hangs "Starting Flush Journal to Persistent Storage"

Hi,

I have an issue with my Arch install on my Thinkpad 440s. 4 out of 5 times Arch boots into GDM and then hangs. It doesn't fully crash but also doesn't accept any keyboard or mouse input. I can see the network status change on the GDM login screen but am not able to log in or switch to a different tty. The issue is not with GDM itself, I tried installing LDM with the same results.

I have had the issue since I first installed Arch 6 months ago and even though I extensively looked for a solution I never found an answer. I switched to the LTS kernel (currently linux-lts 4.9.22-1) but the results are the same there.

I would be really grateful for any help.

Re: GDM Hangs "Starting Flush Journal to Persistent Storage"

Hi,

I have just the same issue with Dell XPS 9360. Also in addition to freezing upon booting it also freezes on waking up from suspend with apparently the same frequency.

Have you managed to solve it?

Thanks.

Re: GDM Hangs "Starting Flush Journal to Persistent Storage"

For now I added this kernal parameter, and it seems to be solved:

i915.enable_rc6=0

I had a similar problem: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1715259
This is where i found the solution: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ke_support

Its only been a few hours since i did this. So if things change, I will update on it here.

Re: GDM Hangs "Starting Flush Journal to Persistent Storage"

Well, I ran into the problem again. While the above fix seems to have solved a few other freezes related to optirun, the above solution, does not entirely solve this problem it seems

Re: GDM Hangs "Starting Flush Journal to Persistent Storage"

For now I have boiled down the problem to either the NetworkManager or bumblebee. When those to services are disabled on startup, the problem does not exist. So far at least. When I log in I manually start the services when needed.
