Distro for a server on an older machine

I need to set up a small file server on an old Pentium, essentially to set up a fake "internet" for people to practice on.  Arch isn't an option, but I've gotten used to the Arch way of doing things & would like to stay with something that's at least close.

Can anybody recommend a distro for this?  Don't need X, just a command line, Apache, etc.

If I had such hardware, I would go for something like NetBSD, which scales nice on old computers. Or OpenBSD if you manage to install it.

If you want to stay on the linux side of the force, go with Debian, although you must get used to the Debian Way of doing things.

Re: Distro for a server on an older machine

I'm currently running an old Ubuntu version (5.04) on my server, which I rarely use. It works fine, I've had no problem. I will soon be updating it to 6.06 Server however.

Yeah, that 5 year support thing is nice in Ubuntu , but Debian is to me more suited to server usage.

Re: Distro for a server on an older machine

I played around with Slackware, then tried Debian, and decided to go with Debian for this project.

Thanks to everybody for your suggestions.
