Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

Greetings,

I'm using an old PC with a GeForce 8600 GT (nvidia-340xx-dkms) for running Kodi. After an upgrade that removed nvidia-libgl in favor of libglvnd, I can't start Kodi.

glxinfo:

libGL: screen 0 does not appear to be DRI2 capable
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/tls/swrast_dri.so
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/swrast_dri.so

libGL: Can't open configuration file /home/teyras/.drirc: No such file or directory.
libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast

  Minor opcode of failed request: 6 (X_GLXIsDirect)

uname -a:

Linux 4.10.10-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Apr 12 18:50:28 CEST 2017 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I tried reinstalling nvidia-340xx-dkms and nvidia-340xx-utils to no avail. Is there anything I can do?

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

please post lspci -k , dmesg, journalctl -b, xorg log.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

Same as this one. Unsetting LD_LIBRARY_PATH from gnustep works around the problem.

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

I don't even have gnustep and $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is empty on my system, so we're probably dealing with something else here. Below is the requested info:

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

The logs clarify you have a system with 1 discrete nvidia videocard, but X is loading 2 drivers : nvidia and modesetting

Check /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

It should look like this :

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "intel"
    MatchDriver "i915"
    Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
    Option "PrimaryGPU" "yes"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia/xorg"
EndSection

That file is intended for a system with an intel/nvidia setup and likely the cause of the problem.

according to man xorg.conf , files in /etc/X11 override settings made in files in /usr/share/X11 .

Please create a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf like this :

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf
Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia/xorg"
EndSection

After creating that file log out of X and start it again, test if this solves your issue.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

Seems like we need more data .

Remove the 20-nvidia.conf file, restart x .
post output of LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo

next :

Temporarily remove all *.conf files you find in /etc/X11 , /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d , usr/share/X11 and /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d folders .
restart x , post log and output of LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

The modesetting driver is always considered and also correctly unloaded - that's not the problem.
You're running the nvidia driver but get error messages from the MESA libGL -  nous was certainly pointing the rigth direction (though the specifics may differ)

Ensure you can boot X11 again, then run "ldd `which glxinfo`" and ensure it somehow resolves /usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.340.102 because afaics, the 340xx series does not support libglvnd ...

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

I was having the same problem, after installing a brand new GTX 1050 Ti. The system had never had an nvidia card in it. The problem, as seth suggested, was that the libGL*.so files were pointing at /usr/lib/mesa/ instead of /usr/lib/nvidia. Updating the symlinks fixed it (I didn't even have to restart X).

Seems like something users should not have to muck with though...

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

I don't know whether the main nvidia package has ever been affected, but atm. only the legacy drivers should be troublesome because of the missing libglvnd support.

A problem is that nvidia-340xx "only" requires libgl, but not nvidia-340xx-utils (as provider) - likely to allow users to deal with hybrid systems as they prefer.

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

I think seth is on to something here.

Teyras,
try removing libglvnd & lib32-libglvnd .
After that, re-install nvidia-340xx-utils .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Here's an example of what happens here for me:

$ ldd /bin/glxinfo
	...
	libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 (0x00007f9087d99000)
        ...

$ ls -l /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 Mar 21 15:36 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 -> libGL.so.1.0.0

$ ls -l /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 551K Mar 21 15:36 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.0

$ pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.0 is owned by libglvnd 0.2.999+g4ba53457-2

So, the end result I get is that the "libGL.so.1" that glxinfo asks for is resolved into a file provided by the libglvnd package.

Supposedly libglvnd doesn't work with 340xx, so what you want on your machine is that a libGL.so file provided by the nvidia package ends up used. You can get a list of files owned by the package with "pacman -Ql nvidia-340xx-utils". Try this to maybe find a libGL library:

pacman -Ql nvidia-340xx-utils | grep "libGL\.so"

For me here with "nvidia-utils", it finds nothing.

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

After an upgrade that removed nvidia-libgl in favor of libglvnd

Just a reminder: if this is the status quo, there's your problem.
The proper replacement for nvidia-340xx-libgl would have been nvidia-340xx-utils  - the 340xx driver doesn't support libglvnd.

If you've changed anything about the above setup, please provide updated error messages from running glxinfo.

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

@seth it should be there nvidia-340xx 340.102-5 has a dependancy of nvidia-340xx-utils=340.102 and from post #17

$ ldconfig -p | grep usr/lib/nvidia
        libnvidia-tls.so.340.102 (libc6,x86-64, ABI OS: Linux 2.3.99) => /usr/lib/nvidia/libnvidia-tls.so.340.102
$ pacman -Fo /usr/lib/nvidia/libnvidia-tls.so.340.102
usr/lib/nvidia/libnvidia-tls.so.340.102 is owned by extra/nvidia-340xx-utils 340.102-8

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

Yes, "should" ...
(do you want the youtube link to "shouldland" as well) tongue

The error messages in the first post however are from /usr/lib/libGLX_indirect.so.0 or /usr/lib/libGLX_mesa.so - the strings do not appear in the nvidia libraries (also not the 340xx variant, just checked)

So (and since libglvnd does not conflict nvidia-340xx-utils) the data provided in #17 (where ldconfig correctly resolves libGL to the nvidia variant) does not match the errors of post #1 - and if there's been an update to the suggested setup (to cause this difference), i've not seen it mentioned in this thread. yet ;-)

Also such update should™ also have caused adjustments to the original problem, which we should™ better see - and if not ("should"), this needs to be clarified

In doubt this should will print the actual file ultimately resolved for libGL and libGLX as used by glxinfo

realpath $(ldd $(which glxinfo) | sed '/libGL[X]*.so/!d;s/.* => \(.*\) (.*/\1/')

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

In post #17 ldconfig -p only shows it has cached the libraries in /usr/lib/nvidia/ the output from post #14 shows it is not using those libraries.
The full output of `$ ldconfig -p` might be useful to see if libGL.so is listed twice.  If not then the man page snippet in post #17 documents the reasons the cache would not be used none of which seem to apply.

I added a conf file to /etc/X11, as recommended in #5.

$ realpath $(ldd $(which glxinfo) | sed '/libGL[X]*.so/!d;s/.* => \(.*\) (.*/\1/')
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib/libGLX.so.0.0.0

Re: Nvidia-340xx - No matching fbConfigs

Can you uninstall libglvnd without pacman complaining that some other packages requires it?
