direct parallel port access

hello everybody,

can anybody point me to some resources on direct parallel port access in linux. I've tried it through dosemu, but it tries to use lpr and it seems to mess things up. I've also tried the ioperm+inb+outb method with no avail. I ran everything i needed to as root but nothing worked. Are there any modules that I need to load besides lp, paraport and paraport-pc? I have another school project that i'm doing that I'd like to port to linux. Thanks in advance for the help
