What controls libreoffice dialog box theme/appearance?

LibreOffice seems to have some gtk compatibility issues. Here are some screenshots comparing geeqie and gimp dialogs vs. LibreOffice with my current theme, VimixLight.

Adwaita seems not to have the issue and is consistent with dialog boxes across applications. I don't have a rhyme or reason for why that works, but vimix, oomix-built and flat plat blue themes don't look the same. The latter two show a slight outline in LibreOffice, but it's nothing like the clear indication of the current dialog choice in other applications.

I've tried passing the "SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk" option, which brings up a dotted outline (helpful), but it's still not what other applications show. I'd like to understand if this is an LO issue or something with the themes I'm using. A lot of things went haywire when gtk 3.20 was released and initially few themes seemed fully compatible. Perhaps that's still the case for this issue?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Edit: forgot to add that this is using openbox.

For others who stumble on this, I've created the question on ask.libreoffice as well.
