[SOLVED] - x86_64 distros won't boot even though it's supported.

Solved it- use archboot iso to boot.
See https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … h/dh8b9us/

Ok, to be clear, I've tried openSUSE, fedora, Mint and finally Arch. Coming from Windows, I'm still a n00bie but I think I'm certain that that my cpu supports x64_86 as:
1. The Hardware Info tool provided in the live cd iso clearly states so.
2. Previous Windows installation was an x64 one.
3. GK

But whenever I select boot into {whatever}_x86_64, kernel panic occurs, my caps-lock and num-luck keys start blinking and all input fails. I have to pull the plug. I'm on an old TOSHIBA C655 laptop with 3Gb RAM and i3.

Considering that i686 support is going to be stopped, I would like to have x86_64.
IDK what more info to provide you guys as the output is not very informative during the panic and I get to see only the last few lines which brag about unrelated things.
I've attached the photos anyways.

You need to zoom in the 2nd image but this line I found intersting:
panic+0x1e3/0x266
and this is reproducible.

I think this confirms my thoughts.....

panic when 'Boot Arch Linux x86_64 live cd' is selected. i686 works totally fine.

Welcome to Arch Linux.

Tell us more about your system.   Specifically, what processor do you have?  How much RAM?  BIOS or UEFI?
A panic means that the kernel has reached a state where nothing makes sense and there is no way to recover without risking data integrity of file systems, etc...

Do you have any way to disable SMP in the bios? Try disabling it and see if you can get the arch iso to boot. It's now a solution but might help get closer to the cause of the problem.

Hi there and welcome to the forums tusharpandey13

I can see you have marked your thread as solved. But how did you resolve it?

Or just giving up that piece of junk...

The thing is archboot iso dates back to Dec 2016 and uses a 4.8 kernel. Chances are you are just experiencing a bug introduced in later kernel release. Once you finished installing (and updating) Arch, you might bump into the very same issue again...

The thing is, the iso from which I originally installed Arch i686 was also dated Dec 2016. It's working. (4.10.13-1 kernel)
No crime to be a little optimistic..

Re: [SOLVED] - x86_64 distros won't boot even though it's supported.

I am not sure what's you point if the Arch ISO you used has a 4.10 kernel. You've explicitly told that the problem is x86_64 only.

Sure there's no crime. I was merely giving a warm hint. In fact if you eventually find out that an Arch installation with the latest kernel does not work, you sort of show that it's a recent bug, which worths reporting.

If it does work, either the latest kernel already has the bug fixed, or archiso might has some bug (unlikely), which also worths reporting.

Re: [SOLVED] - x86_64 distros won't boot even though it's supported.

I'm confused man, I haven't installed the archboot iso yet(internet problem) but the wiki says:-
"It only runs in RAM, without any special filesystems like squashfs, thus it is limited to the RAM which is installed in your system."

Does this mean that it's temporary? Will the installed setup work the same?

The archboot iso runs in ram - just like the regular arch iso.  Either one of those give you a shell with the tools needed to install arch linux to your harddrive following the installation guide.

I am writing this from my x86_64 Arch install. It worked.

You should try booting the latest Arch ISO (2017.05.01, with kernel 4.10.13, the current repo kernel, what you should be using if your installation is updated; it includes x86_64 only) and see if the panic exists. It's probably what you should've tried before trying archboot iso anyway. But whatever you like...(I am aware that you have data traffic limit)

Ya it's updated but by now I'm pretty confident that it won't boot. This is running well so why take the trouble?

Re: [SOLVED] - x86_64 distros won't boot even though it's supported.

You did not get my point. I was suggesting that, _the latest_ Arch ISO should be able to boot just fine, like your current installation, since they have the same kernel. You bumped into the issue probably just because you used an outdated Arch ISO, with a version of kernel that has a issue with x86_64, which is not yet introduced in the kernel used in the archboot ISO and fixed in the latest kernel.

If that's not the case, we (including you) should be worried.

But again, whatever. People don't care. "Magic" is what they care.
