On a fresh ArchLinux installation I installed the following packages:
- xorg-server (+ serveral of the utils)
- nvidia
- libvdpau
- mesa
- bumblebee (to use intel graphics instead of nvidia for most applications)
- xmonad
- xmobar
- tint2
Xmonad and tint2 are started through .xinitrc (and xmobar by Xmonad):
setxkbmap -layout [...]
tint2 &
case "$1" in
openbox)
exec openbox-session ;;
xmonad)
exec xmonad ;;
*) #default
exec xmonad ;;
esacThen X can be started with startx.
I did no Xorg configuration and X seems to work fine (e.g. resolution matches). With and without xmonad.hs, I get the following problem (see screenshot):
While xmobar and tint2 use the full screen width, xmonad tiles only use a portion in the top left corner.
I can use different tiling layouts (like full, tall, ...) and it all works as if the screen had only the size of that small corner.
However, when putting windows into floating mode, they can be moved all over the screen and (where the application supports it) even resized to full screen size.
I could not think of any reason for this problem and did not find anything on the internet. What is going on here?
On the same laptop I had Xmonad running with the same xmonad.hs and (if I didn't miss anything) the same bumblebee/graphics configuration (also no X configuration). The issue never occured.
Hardware: Intel Core i5-4200M, Nvidia GeForce GT 740M
Side note:
After only installing nvidia driver, I could start Xmonad once (and as far as I remember it worked without the issue, but I am not sure) and each time afterwards only a black screen showed up
After installing bumblebee Xmonad worked again but with the issue

Installing xf86-video-intel solved the problem. However, it would still be helpful to know whether and if so why this is required.
