Audio stopped working after update.

The audio stopped working after an update, although while trying to find the source of the problem I noticed when starting a few steam games the audio for them was working but with poor quality and if I open pavucontrol the meter registers audio as playing, I just can't hear it

I'm currently running kernal linux 4.10.13-1,

pulseaudio version

I: [pulseaudio] main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted
I: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Successfully gained nice level -11.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: This is PulseAudio 10.0
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Page size is 4096 bytes
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Machine ID is 5c117b0c466c401cb49328845bb5f48b.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Session ID is c1.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Using runtime directory /run/user/1000/pulse.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Using state directory /home/hyde/.config/pulse.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Using modules directory /usr/lib/pulse-10.0/modules.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Running in system mode: no
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

Things I've tried.

Downgrading the PulseAudio driver from pulseaudio 10.0-3 to pulseaudio-9.0-1 to see if it had something to do with that it didn't.

I've tried restarting the pulseaudio service via,

sudo pulseaudio -k

I get this output,

E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to kill daemon: No such process

And if I try to start pulseaudio with the command

sudo pulseaudio -s

I get this output,

E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to parse command line.

I'm not sure if the above commands and output will help determine the source of the problem, I'll let you decide.

I've also performed a full system upgrade via `pacman -Syu` to ensure I hadn't broken any package dependencies.

Debug Info

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

Here are the outputs of various commands I've tried with details that might help determine what the cause of the problem might be

If you need anymore info please specify and I'll update this post asap.

Re: Audio stopped working after update.

First off, post text as text and not as images ( case in point, I'd like to help but can't since I can't look at imgur links at work). And don't try to start pulseaudio as root, it wouldn't solve anything and has good potential for breakage. Pulseaudio starts as your user all commands can be run in the normal user context (and to start or stop you would have to use

systemctl --user start/stop pulseaudio

)

In addition to the outputs you already intend to provide, add the following, while attempting to play something

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

Re: Audio stopped working after update.

Several things come to mind here:

  1. Your sound input is playing to your HDMI card, are you sure that's what you want? If it is, are you certain that the chosen audio profile is the correct one for your monitor? Check this in pavucontrol's configuration tab

  2. If it isn't and you actually want to play back from the internal card, your internal card is currently using the digital out output, which also isn't something you'd usually want use

    pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo

and then move your output stream to that sink to fix that (although, strangely all your profiles apart from the iec are listed as unavailable, which is kind of strange, I'd have to take a look at the amixer output it might mention something)

Edit: And in order to not break commenting flow you might want to add new information to a seperate post (maybe in addition to updating the OP) so people following the thread get notified of changes/new information. Got to take a look at your amixer output, you are supposed to replace $cardindex from aplay -l with the card index, in this case

amixer -c0
