Hello,
I recently moved to arch. So I'm not that familiar with arch linux and it's configuration.
I'm using a P51 with the workstation dock. Unfortunately I have several sound issues when the laptop is connected to the dock:
- The dock-audio connector does not work
- There is a very high pitched buzzing sound on the headphone.
I'm not sure, which information is needed to solve these problems so I just try:
cat /proc/asound/cards
output:
0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0x2fe3020000 irq 330
seems as if he alsa would not know the dock-audio
...but when I connect headphones to the rear output of the docking-station, the speakers of the notebook are muted... :-/
lsmod | grep 'snd'
output:

intel-sound is recognized...
Do I have to run the instructions from https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Hda-intel ?
If so: I can't run alsaconf - the command is not found.
I hope someone can help me.
Thank you in advance!

I have a few Intel sound cards, and, not quite the same setup, but an HP with a fully working dock (Intel audio, USB3, eSATA). The drivers for you look properly loaded. Did you install pulseaudio? Also, install pavucontrol (assuming you're using a DE) to manage the different cards and ports.
You can also check out alsa-mixer in the console (part of alsa-utils package).
If you're not opposed to pulseaudio, try this:
sudo pacman -S alsa-utils pulseaudio pavucontrol pulseaudio-alsa
Restart of the DE (or OS) or starting pulseaudio are necessary.
Also, check the wiki here for getting pulseaudio going:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio
I steer you toward pulseaudio as it's just easier to manage multiple cards and audio ports, and it may get your dock working properly.
Hopefully this helps, let us know.
Also, welcome to Arch Linux. I haven't looked back after switching several years ago; hopefully it's a good fit for you too.

Hi,
excuse me for answering now.
Thanks for your reply!
I already installed these packages (except pavucontrol but it seems to provide the same features like the pendant from KDE).
Unfortunately I only get two options for the ouput-devices: Speaker and Headphone (intern).
At any time I got at least the microphone working - there were three options: Intern microphone, microphone and microphone (dock).
I do not really know what I have changed since that. Currently the dock-mic is not showing up anymore :-(
Maybe it would be a good idea first to reset all configurations of alsa and search for further steps later.
Is it sufficient to remove the alsa-files from /etc/modprobe.d/ ?
Best regards

I haven't used KDE for awhile, but looks like a comparable tool for pulse audio management.
Yeah, a clear out of the module settings and loading should get you a fresh start on the drivers, not a bad idea. Most of them should be auto-loaded in Arch (after a reboot), but it sounds like the dock could be somewhat of a unicorn configuration, so it may be needed (I wouldn't rule it out).
I'm working on procuring some P51s with docks, so I'll be able to test this is a couple weeks too. Hopefully someone else has a P50/51 with dock (I believe the dock is the same for both) that could chime in sooner.
The HP zBook acts as a shared passthru; no separate devices for the dock. Sounds totally different than what IBM is doing

Thank you!
I'll try this next weekend.
Thanks a lot! - Yes, the dock is AFAIK exactly the same.
Would be a great thing if it would be that easy with lenovo, too :-)
Offline
Post the following commands, once while on the dock and once while off the dock
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sources
Offline
On the dock:
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sources
Off the dock:
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sources
(list-cards and list-sources gave exactly the same output on the dock and off the dock)
list-sinks only differs in the "current latenzy" I think :-/
Does that mean that there is only the one device and that it should work correctly out of the box?

Thanks for all your contributions!
The issue was solved by any updates in the past.
Threre are no problems with dock-audio since several months.
