[SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

Hi there, I'm running Windows 10 inside a kvm with my GPU passed through to the VM guest. Everything works fine inside the VM except when I try to play games I get really bad performance. Interestingly the performance is not influenced by the game settings, e.g. Fallout 4 with "ultra" settings 60fps with many drops to 10-20 fps and same result with "low" settings. When starting a game CPU and GPU load is pretty low (Ghost Recon Wildlands benchmark on "ultra" also nearly identical on "low": CPU load 20%-30% and GPU load 40%-50% with average of 23fps).

As advised here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PC … h_via_OVMF I spoofed the GPU vendor ID to install the GPU drivers in Windows. I already tried CPU pinning, which didn't change anything (as expected, because I don't think this issue is related to CPU usage).  I also set the interrupts inside the VM of the GPU and integrated sound chip to MSI.

I tend to think, that it may be possible that it's related to still buggy UEFI/BIOS and IOMMU isolation issues.

Games I tested:
Fallout 4 (low and ultra settings): 60fps with many drops to 10-20fps (Locations with many "usable" objects onscreen)
Ghost Recon Wildlands(low and ultra): 23fps
Battlefield 4: mostly 60fps

EDIT 3:
Here I have some geekbench results:

EDIT 2:
Just wanted to at, that i use Synergy to pass my mouse and keyboard to the VM guest. This works pretty we'll and I can't really notice any input latency.

Now to the system specs:

Hardware:
CPU: AMD ryzen 1700
Mainboard: Asrock AB350m pro4 (UEFI version: 2.10)
GPU 1: AMD R5 230 (for the host)
GPU 2: Nvidia Gigabyte GTX 1070 OC mini (for the guest)
HDD: Samsung 960 EVO NVME SSD
RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws 3200mhz (atm running at 2133mhz)

EDIT 4:

PCIe setup is as following:

PCIe1: PCIe 2.0 x1 Slot (empty)
PCIe2: PCIe 3.0 x16 Slot (GTX 1070)
PCIe3: PCIe 2.0 x16 slot, x4 used (R5 230)

Host:

mkinitcpio.conf

# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
MODULES="vfio vfio_iommu_type1 vfio_pci vfio_virqfd"

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=""

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=""

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS="base"
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS="base udev autodetect block filesystems"
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS="base udev block filesystems"
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS="base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems"
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
# HOOKS="base udev block lvm2 filesystems"
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block lvm2 filesystems keyboard keymap fsck shutdown"

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

Your Motherboard + ryzen processor  combo has 3 pci express slots :

PCIE1 - x1 , 1 lane
PCIE2 - x16, 16 lanes
PCIE3 - x16, 4 lanes

Is the GTX card in PCIE3 ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Thanks for mentioning it. The GTX 1070 is in PCIe slot 2 and the R5 230 in slot 3.

I will add that in my first post to keep every information together.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

So, I also tried the linux-mainline 4.11rc8-1 kernel, I think it helps a bit (to make it more concrete in average ~5-10fps in Fallout 4) but still massive performance loss.

  <cpu mode='host-passthrough' check='none'>
    <topology sockets='1' cores='16' threads='1'/>
  </cpu>

Was this set automatically ?
Does performance change if you set it to 8 cores with 2 threads ?

Well no, this was set manually in virt-manager. Automatically it sets 16 sockets and 1 core per socket, I think, which leads to a dramatic performance los as only 1 core is recognized by windows. I also set it manually to 8 cores and 2 threads, but well unfortunately same result, windows only recognizes 1 core. What works is to edit it manually via virsh, like mentioned in the arch wiki and pin the threads to the individual cores. But I'm not quite sure what it did with the virtual cores then (it was two weeks ago and I only know, that it didn#t change something performance wise) or enter this config manually in virt-manager. Personally I had the best result with setting it to "host-passthrough" 16 cores on 1 socket.

Today Asrock released an uefi update, I will run the update as soon as I come home and post the results here.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

Ok I updated and tested again, unfortunately still the same results.

Would be interesting if someone else who also uses a ryzen and GPU passthrough faces the same issues or if just bought the wrong mainboard or did something wrong in my config.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

I cannot offer any help with resolving this, but have experienced the same issues with similar hardware. Spent the last couple of weeks fiddling!

Only thing I can confirm from my testing is that your issue is not exclusive to Nvidia.

My configuration tested with acs override patch with downstream option, patched Kernels 4.10.8 to 4.11.
Config similar to yours except Hugepages enabled (no change to issue). Have tried q35 and i440fx. CPU pinning does not change issue, have tried with just cores on one CCX.

Hardware:
CPU: Ryzen 1700 @3800 (performance governor & processor.ignore_ppc=1)
Mobo: Asrock X370 Taichi (2.20 BIOS)
RAM: 16 GB @2666
PCIe2 Host GPU : GTX 970 (should run PCIe 3.0 x 8)
PCIe3 Guest GPU: GTX 1070 (should run PCIe 3.0 x 8)
Storage: 1 x Host SSD, 1 x Guest SSD, 1 x Samba shared NTFS HDD

CPU performance in guest is excellent, benchmarks such as Cinebench show this very close to native Windows 10.

GPU shows low utilisation in many titles, but even worse nothing is smooth. Lower settings might have been passable compromise, but too much hitching/pauses to use.

Tested this weekend with Guest RX 580 and Host RX 550 and issue still present, still low utilisation.
Only observed issue resolved was timing issue seen in playback of game cutscenes/movies, eg. opening titles in Metro Last Light Redux, this is extremely slow under GTX 1070, smooth with RX 580.

I do not have the same titles to test, but some repeated observations from free software:
Cinebench; OpenGL test shows low performance, estimated in line with GTX460. CPU performance excellent.
Unigine Superposition: High GPU utilisation in Direct X mode, low in OpenGL mode.

Is there anything that could cause different APIs to perform diffently? What could cause a bottleneck in GPU utilisation if CPU is performing OK?

Happy to provide specifics of config, or run any suggestions for debugging.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

I'm thinking this might be related to windows not detecting some parts of the system needed for performance (like the PCI express bus).

Can one of you get me some screenshots from inside the VM  (couldn't find a way to export the info i want) :

open device manager
switch it to tree view
expand the graphics card driver, so it becomes clear how W10 thinks the cpu and graphic card are interconnected

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

First of all I want to thank you for the replies. Also it's good to see, that I'm not the only one suffering from this issue.

@Lone_Wolf: Ok, I've got a screenshot for you here. I think I have all drivers required drivers installed. Also I made sure, that I installed all needed virtio drivers (at least I hope so).

Device-Manager

EDIT 1: I also tried cinebench and unigine superposition benchmark with similar results:
- cinebench CPU performance OK, GPU performance on par with GTX 460
- unigine superposition DirectX 100% utilizaition, OpenGL maybe 30%

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

Created a new Q35 install with RX 580, device manager details below:

https://ibb.co/dJOED5

Previously mostly tested i440fx, still seeing same performance issue.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

Combined that suggests that changing the virtual chipset to one that supports PCI express doesn't solve this (or is not enough) .

run lspci -vvnn as root and post the output.

Also the IOMMU groups list and /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf contents

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

I also opened a support ticket at Asrock regarding this issue:

Email send by me:

Hi,
I have a request regarding the given mainboard and PCI passthrough. On my system I'm running Arch Linux 64bit with the 4.11 Kernel and use kvm to run a virtualized Windows 10 64bit home with a GTX 1070 passed through to the vm guest. This workes as expected, the ryzen gets recognized by Windows 10 and it was also possible to install the nvidia drivers. The only thing that doesn't run as expected are games or programms with higher GPU loads, here I'm facing dramatic performance loss. For more system details you can take a look at the following thread which I opened here:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=225761

Now my question is, if it's possible that this issue may be related to UEFI and/or CPU microcode issues and if it will be fixed with upcoming UEFI versions. Or if you have any information regarding this performance issue.

I'm aware, that this is a pretty unusal setup and that this issue can have multiple soft- and hardware related reasons, but I'm hoping that you can still give me a feedback to my request.

Thank you for your help and kind regards

Reply from Asrock:

Hello,

I will forward your email to our BIOS department to have a closer look on it. Hope we can do/fix something.

But it might take a while, because they are very busy with next coming Intel/AMD mainboards and still optimizing actual AM4 mainboards.

Once we get feedback from them, we let you know.

Best regards,

ASRock Support

IOMMU Group 2 00:03.0 Host bridge [0600]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Device [1022:1452]
IOMMU Group 2 00:03.1 PCI bridge [0604]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Device [1022:1453]
IOMMU Group 2 09:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070] [10de:1b81] (rev a1)
IOMMU Group 2 09:00.1 Audio device [0403]: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 High Definition Audio Controller [10de:10f0] (rev a1)

You are not passing through the first two devices of group 2.

some snippets from the info about the 2nd device in goup 2 :

00:03.1 PCI bridge [0604]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Device [1022:1453] (prog-if 00 [Normal decode])

	Capabilities: [58] Express (v2) Root Port (Slot+), MSI 00

		LnkCap:	Port #0, Speed 8GT/s, Width x16, ASPM L1, Exit Latency L0s <512ns, L1 <64us

That looks very much like a PCI Express  port, capable of PCIe v3 speeds .

Passing through those 2 extra devices is  a bit tricky, as vfio-pci only accepts pci ids and there are multiple devices with those ids.
There is  however a driver_override setting that can be used to bind pci devices to vfio statically .

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PC … _host_GPUs has an example how to do this, but the script it lists is not suited for your goal.

A bit of searching lead me to the original vfio blog that section is based on.

example script

#!/bin/sh

# /usr/bin/vfio-pci-override.sh
DEVS="0000:01:00.0 0000:01:00.1 0000:02:00.0 0000:02:00.1"

for DEV in $DEVS; do
    echo "vfio-pci" > /sys/bus/pci/devices/$DEV/driver_override
done

modprobe -i vfio-pci

Put the bus addresses of the 4 devices in iommu group 2 in the DEVS array , save in /usr/bin and make sure it's executable.

Follow the arch wiki section for other needed steps.

Once everything is in place, reboot, start win10 and test.
Windows 10 should see new hardware and hopefully perform much better after installing drivers for it.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

First of all thanks for the provided steps and your effort. You're correct the PCI bridge is indeed a  PCIe v3 port. I've managed to load the vfio driver for the Host Bridge and pass it through the guest, for the PCI bridge it was not possible. Also as stated here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PC … g_vfio-pci

Note: If, as noted here, your pci root port is part of your IOMMU group, you must not pass its ID to vfio-pci, as it needs to remain attached to the host to function properly. Any other device within that group, however, should be left for vfio-pci to bind with.

I should not passthrough the PCI bridge or did I got something wrong? My vfio-pci-override.sh looks like this by the way (PCI bridge is included, but doesn't change the driver):

#!/bin/sh

# /usr/bin/vfio-pci-override.sh
DEVS="0000:00:03.0 0000:00:03.1 0000:09:00.0 0000:09:00.1"

for DEV in $DEVS; do
    echo "vfio-pci" > /sys/bus/pci/devices/$DEV/driver_override
done

modprobe -i vfio-pci

The Host Bridge however is recognized by Windows as "PCI standard host CPU bridge". I run the benchmarks again, but unfortunately the results are still the same.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

Well I got another response from ASrock today

Hello,

I got feedback from our BIOS department. This might improve the performance.

1. IOMMU to enabled.

Path: BIOS\Advanced\North Bridge Configuration\IOMMU

2. SR-IOV Support to enabled.

Path: BIOS\Advanced\North Bridge Configuration\SR-IOV Support

3. SVM Mode to enabled.

Path: BIOS\Advanced\CPU Configuration\ SVM Mode

After above setting, it may improve the GPU performance under VM environment.

Best regards,

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

Sounds like the ticked was routed to lowest level of Asus Bios support staff.

One thing that may be worth a shot : force windows to re-check the hardware.

As for leaving the root port out : that was targeted at an intel chipset, AMD may have different mechanisms.
Testing is only way to be sure.

For now i'd recommended to wait for kernel 4.11, as that appears to have fixes for ryzen systems.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

I'm guessing you have npt enabled? If you have npt enabled the more cores you pass the worse the gpu performance as best I can tell. Try only passing four cores, I do 8, 10, 12, and 14, something like:

  9 <vcpu placement='static'>4</vcpu>
 10 <cputune>

GPU performance on ryzen seems to do much better though if you disable npt (figuring out why that is is a work in progress) and enable msi as you already did. I run 4 core with npt=1 still because I can't stand the lag without, but depending on the game that may not be an option. If you disable npt you may notice windows only sees one core, if that happens, disable smep like so:

 36 <cpu mode='host-passthrough' check='none'>
 37 <topology sockets='1' cores='4' threads='1'/>
 38 <feature policy='disable' name='smep'/>
 39 </cpu>

Edit:
You can check if npt is enabled via cat /sys/module/kvm_amd/parameters/npt and disable it via creating /etc/modprobe.d/kvm-amd.conf and doing 'options kvm-amd npt=1'. But yeah... gpu performance on windows via passthrough on ryzen isn't the best at the moment.

And uh, if anyone has debugging ideas, Alex asked a similar question http://www.spinics.net/lists/kvm/msg149446.html, I'd love to help, but am in a bit over my head smile

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

Well, yes, I didn't expect that much, because I don't think it's to common to do such things with consumer boards wink But I've got another mail where they informed me, that they escalated the request to the specialized team, so I will wait for an answer.

Hi dugfin, thank you for the answer, I tried this but passing through less cores didn't change anything for me and as you said disabling npt makes the guest very unresponsive and is not an option.

I allready tried the 4.11 kernel out of the AUR, which didn't change that much, so I think I will just wait, maybe some one will find answer or it get's fixed by a BIOS update.

But if someone has a working Ryzen config where GPU passthrough works as expected, please answer and inform us about your setup big_smile

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

No one has gotten close to native performance on both cpu and gpu that I know of. I play all the games I enjoy without problem with a ryzen 1700 with gpu passthrough (the most graphically demanding is probably doom, ultra settings with vulcan and I get around 40-50fps. Also play ds3 and hots with no issues. My setup is what I referred to, npt=1, 4 cores passthrough nvidia gtx 980, 16g of ram, hugepages enabled, isolcpu 8-15. There are quite a few posts at /r/vfio on the topic if you're curious.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

Looks like this will be worth retesting with AGESA 1.0.0.6, IOMMU grouping is confirmed by AMD to be improved:
Ryzen's IOMMU groupings w/AGESA 1006 "will be very happy"
Also:
KVM GPU passthrough (IOMMU) issue on Ryzens AMD-V
"Support for GPU passthrough is a planned feature that will be enabled soon, in a BIOS update released by all motherboard manufacturers. The specific timing for your specific motherboard is unknown but AMD is aware of the issue and actively working to address it."

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

No change to performance issues with AGESA 1006 beta on x370 Taichi.

GPUs are in separate groups now, but essential PCIe USB card is not, so still having to use ACS downstream, multifunction.

Edit: RAM support marginally better, can get 2933 out of my XMP 3200 Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 Samsung e-die

So finally the AGESA 1006 update was released for my board.
As okal wrote, the groups changed a bit and look like this now (I think only the host bridge was removed form group 13, USB stuff isn't so relevant for me, because I'm using synergy for my mouse and keyboard input) :

Also my RAM still won't run higher than 2400MHz.

Re: [SOLVED][PCI GPU passthrough] GPU performance issues

So it's been a while since I opened the thread and I thought I should give an update.

After I tried many many things, including compiling a custom kernel with different settings, replacing the AMD GPU for an AMD RX550 (just to be sure that I don't have an issue there and because the R5 230 lacks good drivers and power), I gave up and started to wait, testing it again with each kernel or bios update. And today I patched my system to BIOS version 3.30 and finally to 4.10, it seems to actually work! Nearly raw performance in the benchmarks and game scence I used before, nearly no audio stuttering and so on!

Just one second thing I wanted to ad
With the RX550 in the secondary PCIe slot and IOMMU enabled I was not able to boot at first. Changing the grub boot parameter from iommu=1 to iommu=pt helped here, but I'm still getting warnings in the boot log (but it works).

Grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet iommu=pt amd_iommu=on video=efifb:off"

mkinitcpio.conf:

MODULES="vfio-pci vfio_iommu_type1"
.
.
.
FILES="/etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf /usr/bin/vfio-pci-override.sh"
.
.
.
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block lvm2 filesystems keyboard keymap fsck shutdown"

vfio script:

And here the error messages from the kernel log:
