Change Lock Screen Background in Mate

Mate was recently patched so that the lockscreen background is forced to match the user set desktop background. See:

https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-sc … /issues/55
https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-sc … 2d361eb27f

This means that previous workarounds which allowed users to set the lock screen background to an image of their choice, regardless of the desktop image setting, no longer work. (Before the lock screen backround defaulted one way, now it defaults another, but in both cases the user can not independently control it.)

Any ideas out there how to override this new default Mate behavior and set the lock screen background  to something other than the desktop background image?

Re: Change Lock Screen Background in Mate

I have the same problem and I'm looking so hard for a solution.

It's even worse if you use two monitors, because the desktop background image is centered between the monitors and to the left on the left monitor and to the right on the right monitor the default background is shown.

This is so ugly and so annoying! Please help!

Re: Change Lock Screen Background in Mate

I don't think there is a solution. I asked the devs to reopen the feature request for mate screensaver to allow one to set the lockscreen background independent of the desktop or any other background setting. They agreed that the patch which broke the old workarounds did not actually provide the feature that had been requested. You can see my comments and the response in the first link above.

But somehow they still see the current situation as an improvement, even though it is no longer possible even with a messy workaround to set the lockscreen background image. Before it was funky, but you could do what you wanted. Now you have no independent control over the lockscreen background.

Anyway, it took two years from when the feature request was created to the current patch. So I'm not holding my breath that this will be fixed anytime soon, if at all.

Anyway, so now we're stuck waiting for the feature to be implemented.

Re: Change Lock Screen Background in Mate

Sorry, I didn't read the whole first link.

It doesn't bother me that much, that I cannot change the background independently, but this ugly two monitor bug drives me crazy.

Monitor setup unlocked: https://pasteboard.co/8THoq3nJy.jpg
Left monitor lockscreen: https://pasteboard.co/8TIjiQF3f.jpg
Right monitor lockscreen: https://pasteboard.co/TaIHTrMM.jpg

I'm a developer, but I'm afraid I don't have the time or endurance to fix this myself. And if I did, would the devs pull the changes? I doubt it.

Re: Change Lock Screen Background in Mate

I can see how that is annoying with your two monitor setup.

Yeah, at the end of the day this is a small thing. But there's all kinds of small things with Linux desktops that get addressed. And it is frustrating when a situation is patched only to make it worse, and that took two years. I'm a little worried that Mate doesn't have the support it needs to really continue to be a functional desktop. I've got other similar kinds of weirdness with how icons render, other elements of themes, Caja doing weird things and crashing. Mate, for me, has become less stable as time as gone on. I guess the move to Gtk3 was necessary, but from an end user point of view I don't see any benefit to it and only problems.
