smb client file manager functionality failure (new behavior)

I have a new, intermittent problem that appears to be getting worse over time. File managers on multiple systems are intermittently unable to browse the network. No recent configuration changes have been made. This occurs on multiple networks with both Windows shares and/or Linux shares. Clicking on “Browse Network” in Caja or Thunar eventually throws the error:

Could not display “network:///”.
Please select another viewer and try again.

Smbtree shows exactly what it should. Typing the share name into the address bars of the file managers works perfectly everytime. There is no firewall on any of the machines. The host names of the machines are 8 character alphanumeric strings with no white spaces. I have tried many of the common tricks like changing the order of name resolve order in smb.conf and trying various combinations/permutations of hosts in nsswitch. Rebooting will not necessarily correct the problem. Cifs is loaded, smbd/nmbd/winbindd are enabled. Testparm shows no problems. Avahi-browse -alr shows all shares. Network printers always work.

I suspect a problem with gvfs-smb, but I don’t know where to go next. What’s the next right thing to do?
