[SOLVED] Kernel 4.11.2-1-ARCH: Stuck at boot waiting for devices

Hey. I'm new here so i hope it's the right place to post this.
I was running 4.10.13-1 on a HP ZBook G3 just fine, but after upgrading to 4.11.2-1 i'm stuck at boot. I can unlock the LUKS encrypted disk, but by the time the Display Manager should take over the screen turns black and the fans spin up like the laptop is busy with heavy duty work, but it is not responding. I can't soft reset or switch ttys or anything.
The last thing found in journalctl before i hard reset the system:

You could try to boot from the install media and disable the display manager and see if you can get to the terminal. At the same time if you have quiet on your kernel command line you could try to remove it and see if any of the messages provides any clue as to why the system is hanging.

Yes, i changed the runlevel to 3 (non-graphical) and reached tty1. Same when i disable lightdm. So it might be related to the i915 driver. The device gets actually killed if i wait long enough, but i still see nothing but a black screen.

The quiet option wasn't set. I would like to try debug though. Is there any way to aquire the dmesg output of a previous boot? Since i cannot check anything while it hangs, i'd have to reboot into non-graphical mode again to check logs but then i can only check recent dmesg which is useless.

What do you mean with "The device gets actually killed if i wait long enough"? If you stay without activity long enough on a tty it is supposed to go dark.

You could try to start your desktop environment manually and see if it can also hang your machine. One think you could try is to fully enable the sysrq key (see [1]) (hint: also google for sysrq and the "magical" sequence reisub) and _maybe_ you could reboot your machine somewhat cleanly if it doesn't hang completely. This way you might be able to recover the kernel log from the previous boot.

I am experiencing what I believe to be the same issue, and I was able to shut down and unmount disks. I received a kernel oops, though, and had to hold down power button.

The device in question is an nvidia video card using nouveau. This laptop also has intel integratged video via i915.

I followed Rookie's suggestion and rebooted using the magic SysRq as soon as the system hung, then immediately bootet a live arch installation, chrooted into my installation and tried to read journalctl -k but there were no entries. dmesg also doesn't help because it only shows the entries of the live system.

I was refering to this log line

But i guess that's just a symptom of something happening earlier that i cannot see as long as i don't get a hold of the kernel logs.

You could try to start your desktop environment manually and see if it can also hang your machine. One think you could try is to fully enable the sysrq key (see [1]) (hint: also google for sysrq and the "magical" sequence reisub) and _maybe_ you could reboot your machine somewhat cleanly if it doesn't hang completely. This way you might be able to recover the kernel log from the previous boot.

If you can sync and unmount fine you can point journalctl to the directory that contains your logs with -D, typically /var/log/journal/big_string_here. Obviously you'll have to add your mountpoint to that path. See 'man journalctl' for more details.

Hmm, I think I have a different issue than you do, though with a similar symptom. If I blacklist nouveau or disable nouveau modesetting, then I can boot normally. I can't reach a tty in single user mode either, as my hang occurs earlier when the modeswitch is supposed to happen.


I'm the type to fling myself headlong through the magical wardrobe, and then incinerate the ornate mahogany portal behind me with a Molotov cocktail.

Could you elaborate on how to aquire a shell in that scenario? I can get my system to reboot with sysrq reisub, but before reboot i still see nothing but a black screen and cannot switch ttys or anything. Meanwhile i followed your advise and disabled lightdm. Now i'm executing startx after logging in to tty1 manually. So this seems to boil down to a problem with graphical login.

You do not need a shell in that scenario as the journal should be preserved after reisub.  As you can now access a console with lightdm disabled please post the journal for a boot with the issue and the contents of xorg.log.

I think i just solved it by setting

logind-check-graphical=true

like stated here. After a couple of reboots the problem hasn't appeared again.
I've seen this race between graphics driver and lightdm on older kernels, but it never caused a system crash and could be fixed by restarting lightdm from a terminal. So something must have changend in 4.11. Anyway, thank you guys very much for your support! I'm marking this as solved.
