Embedding Totem into Epiphany

Totem embeds into firefox on my machine fine with totem-plugin but I cannot get it embedded in epiphany. Reading the epiphany blurb, totem should embed 'out of the box' and not require the mozilla plugin.

Any ideas why it might not be working?

Re: Embedding Totem into Epiphany

Totem needs the mozilla plugin to embed in epiphany too. Unless you have installed programs like vlc and mplayer-plugin, totem should embed into epiphany fine.

It doesn't though, even with the plugin. Doesn't work in Galeon either. I suppose it might work with Firefox though, haven't tried that with Gnome but I'll see.

Yep, the plugin works fine with Firefox, but doesn't exist as far as Galeon or Epiphany are concerned. Is it compiled against Firefox instead of XULRunner? And would a version compiled against XULRunner work with Firefox?

(Grr. This compatibility stuff is getting very annoying very fast.)

Re: Embedding Totem into Epiphany

I think I know what is causing this:
- xulrunner has been upgraded to 1.8.0.4, which had some compatibility problems with 1.8.0.1
- firefox uses LD_LIBRARY_PATH vars to set a linker path

What happens here: the totem plugin is broken with xulrunner 1.8.0.4 because of changes, but it works with firefox because firefox preloads its own libs, which work fine.

I'll upgrade totem and its plugin to 1.4.1 and compile it with the latest xulrunner, all should be fine again then.

Thanks but it still doesn't work... Probably, in part, because it never worked with any version of XULRunner, not just 1.8.0.4. As far as Galeon and Epiphany are concerned, the plugin still doesn't exist.

Re: Embedding Totem into Epiphany

The plugin used to work fine, but I guess it stopped working due to some (packaging?) bug in xulrunner. Upgrading and rebuilding didn't work out, it works perfectly with firefox, but not with the embedded browsers. Looking at strace output, the plugin is looked for, but it is never written to the pluginreg.dat file.

Re: Embedding Totem into Epiphany

Fixed in 1.4.1-2. Seems it doesn't like to get linked to xulrunner libraries, it compiles without xulrunner or nspr dependencies now and works with epiphany and firefox.

Yep it definitely works... And it's gotten a heck of a lot better since I last used it, it works as well as mplayer-plugin now (though it doesn't handle Realmedia) and seems more stable.

Re: Embedding Totem into Epiphany

The only thing that I could find in this release:
- open a movie in a new tab
- close the tab
- open another movie
- crash

This works:
- open a movie in a new tab
- after watching it, hit back botton or type a new URL
- close the tab
- open another movie
- works

Somehow the plugin renders itself in a useless state when closing the tab while it is active.

Re: Embedding Totem into Epiphany

Really? I didn't notice that... :?

(What makes it useful at this point is that it actually handles most of the formats you see movies in. It also seems more stable and somewhat better designed than mplayer-plugin. Not perfect, probably not even stable software, but as I said better than it used to be.)
