Hi
I'm using arch with Plasma 5.9.5, KDE frameworks 5.34.0 and Qt 5.8.0.
I configured KDE to show the application launcher when right-clicking on the desktop.
One thing though that drives me crazy is that in the menu that then opens, only pointless, ambigious descriptions like "Mail client" are shown and not the actual names of the programs; that is very annoying as you have to know the arbitrary "description" that has been given to a particular program; e.g. if you have several calendar apps installed it is difficult to know by their description, which one is meant!
The application launcher in the panel at least shows real program names under the description.
How can I make KDE show these actual names in the app menu that opens when right-clicking on the desktop?
Thanks.

Sounds like that menu uses GenericName-field from the .desktop-file instead of Name-field .
sorry, no idea how to change that.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

It is a very simple task to accomplish. Right-click on the menu icon, click on Application Launcher Settings, and check the box that says Show Applications by Name. You will find that KDE Pasma is full of little right-click adventures like this.

This works for Application Launcher widget, yes, but the one found in Configure Desktop - Mouse Actions (select Application Launcher in drop-down menu), still shows only description.

Hi,
thanks everyone for their input: indeed c00ter's fix only pertains to the app launcher of the panel, not the one that opens on mouse action on the desktop.
Unfortunately it seems there is no solution right now to fix this irritating behaviour (what would anyone make of a description like "Document Viewer"! thats really absurd, it could be everything).
Thanks again.

I was bothered by the same issue!
Here is what I found, the change I made, tested and verified to work:
edit: ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc
find: [ActionPlugins][0][RightButton;NoModifier]
..... showAppsByName=false
edit: false > true
save: Reboot > Works : )
