[SOLVED] Gnome - GDM change background image brake GDM

try to change background image on following the WIKI entry here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GD … ound_image
But result was a black screen with cursor and GDM does not show up at all...
I do this a lot of times before and it always worked for me.#

May there is some change in the binary that does not fit with the process?

Someone try this and get the same or is it me wink

Hi,

I did this too just recently. Worked for me. Maybe I can help if you tell me a bit about your process.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome - GDM change background image brake GDM

i just follow exact what the wiki say, but after rebnooting gdm does not start it only show the cursor on black screen...

here i do:

#lockDialogGroup {
  background: #2e3436 url(background.png);
  background-size: 1920px 1080px;
  background-repeat: no-repeat;
}

the picture is that size...

I do not find any logs to that gdm failing... may you can hint me on this?

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome - GDM change background image brake GDM

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=197036
last entry also say it does not work ....

I solved by using this:

#lockDialogGroup {
  background: #2e3436 url(background.png));
  background-size: cover;
  background-repeat: no-repeat;
  border:solid transparent 1px;
}

I do not know wich of the two options push GDM to work with the background...

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome - GDM change background image brake GDM

I made a flat black background in my laptop's native FHD resolution. It's a basic .png without even compression (I plan on changing this). So the entry in gnome-shell.css is just:

#lockDialogGroup {
  background: #2e3436 url(black1920x1080.png);
  background-size: 1920px 1080px;
  background-repeat: no-repeat; }

You can also use the following script to further automate the process outlined in the ArchWiki.

Call it login-background.sh and invoke it using:

# IMAGE=~/black1920x1080.png sh login-background.sh
WORKDIR=~/tmp/gdm-login-background
GST=/usr/share/gnome-shell/gnome-shell-theme.gresource
GSTRES=$(basename $GST)

mkdir -p $WORKDIR
cd $WORKDIR
mkdir theme

for r in `gresource list $GST`; do
  gresource extract $GST $r >$WORKDIR$(echo $r | sed -e 's/^\/org\/gnome\/shell\//\//g')
done

cd theme
cp "$IMAGE" ./

echo "
#lockDialogGroup {
  background: #2e3436 url(resource:///org/gnome/shell/theme/$(basename $IMAGE));
  background-size: cover;
  background-repeat: no-repeat;
}" >>gnome-shell.css

echo '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<gresources>
  <gresource prefix="/org/gnome/shell/theme">' >"${GSTRES}.xml"
for r in `ls *.*`; do
  echo "    <file>$r</file>" >>"${GSTRES}.xml"
done
echo '  </gresource>
</gresources>' >>"${GSTRES}.xml"

glib-compile-resources "${GSTRES}.xml"

sudo mv "/usr/share/gnome-shell/$GSTRES" "/usr/share/gnome-shell/${GSTRES}.backup"
sudo mv "$GSTRES" /usr/share/gnome-shell/

rm -r $WORKDIR

if [ "$CREATED_TMP" = "1" ]; then
  rm -r ~/tmp
fi
