New hardware to passthrough (Kaby lake)

Hello there smile

Hope you're all fine smile

In the next weeks, I would like to try my self to make a Windows VM using Qemu to play my games under Windows.

I'm read : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PC … h_via_OVMF adn I find that :

"If you find your PCI devices grouped among others that you do not wish to pass through, you may be able to seperate them using Alex Williamson's ACS override patch. Make sure you understand the potential risk of doing so.
You will need a kernel with the patch applied. The easiest method to acquiring this is through the linux-vfioAUR package.
In addition, the ACS override patch needs to be enabled with kernel command line options. The patch file adds the following documentation:"

I understand that I'm not patch de ACS if my groups are already separated but is this work's with the kabylake architecture ? (I would like to buy :  Intel Core i7 7700K btw)
I think so if I read : http://ark.intel.com/search/advanced?s=t&VTX=true& who his specified in the same arch wiki link but I would likee to be sur before bying my hardware.

My GPU is a Asus strix 980, sO i think this one support UEFI BIOS cause it's actually use under my Linux desktop who is installed with UEFI. But I may miss one thing..

Can youi confirm this to me please ?

PS : I woud like to use this new motherboard : Asus Z170 Pro Gaming

Can you confirm to me that I can order it please ?

Thx a lot smile

Re: New hardware to passthrough (Kaby lake)

If you want to do pass-through, you have to look for CPUs with VT-d in addition to (just) VT-x. (or the AMD equivalent of this but I do not know their naming for it)
As such, the i7 7700K should work fine. According to the Intel specs it has VT-d.

On this subject, you may want to check out Intel's page about this to find their own supported system configuration: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ … 05758.html

Re: New hardware to passthrough (Kaby lake)

Both should be fine as far as I'm aware but be sure to check the specs yourself as well.

If you end up having problems with the GPU in your VM later on, the problem will most likely be the nVidia driver, not the card itself.
nVidia has this check in their drivers that, if it detects virtualization, stops the driver from working. There are ways around this though so be sure to check the WIKI on how to do so.
