perl-5.26 seems to break several components of texlive

I upgraded my system yesterday which came with a lot of perl related upgrades. Today, I tried to run latexdiff, on a document that was working yesterday before the upgrade.

I got only the following output:

Negative repeat count does nothing at /usr/bin/latexdiff line 1064, <DATA> line 26542.
author is used twice in preamble of old file. Reverting to pure line diff mode for preamble.
Unescaped left brace in regex is illegal here in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/command{ <-- HERE \\DIFaddbeginFL}{((?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}]|\{(?:[^{}])*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*\})*)}/ at /usr/bin/latexdiff line 1171, <DATA> line 31168.

After downgrading only the perl package with pacman -Ud, latexdiff was running and producing a diff file. However, latexmk did not want to run on the diff file. I am not sure, if it is because latexdiff was producing a wrong diff file, or if it is because latexmk did not work.

Anyhow, after downgrading all packages related to perl (perl-*, see list), it is working again.

Look for the one that's already there before opening a new one.

Re: perl-5.26 seems to break several components of texlive

I could not find any bug report when I checked before making this post. I just made this forum post, because I wanted to make sure that it is not just some stupid mistake on my side. I always feel a bit intimidated by the whole bug reporting process. However, I saw that the texlive-core package is already flagged out-of-date. Should I still report a bug in that case?

Yeah, the ticket I was thinking of is different. I can't say what the issue is here, if it's a bug or something else.

Re: perl-5.26 seems to break several components of texlive

I tried to use the latexdiff version directly from Github. (I copied latexdiff, latexdiff-vc and latexrevise to a folder which I added to $PATH). Then, I needed to install perl-algorithm-diff, but it is working with the version from Github. The version in texlive-core does not work even if perl-algorithm-diff is installed.

Re: perl-5.26 seems to break several components of texlive

Having the same problem here. But git version did not work for me either.

I checked the line that causes the problem and actually it seems to be quite trivial. The line just writes the DIF DEL line (after the documentclass):

\documentclass[12pt,a4paper]{article}
%DIF LATEXDIFF DIFFERENCE FILE
%DIF DEL example-draft.tex   Thu Jun 15 16:27:32 2017
%DIF ADD example-rev.tex     Thu Jun 15 16:27:32 2017

Specifically " "x(length($oldfile)-length($newfile)) causes the problem for me, as a negative number is given to the repeat operator ("x"). Thus the error makes sense (negative repeat count...). x(...) is there because of the alignment of the two lines (so that the dates are right-aligned), but this depends on which file name is longer. I proposed a solution on github (https://github.com/ftilmann/latexdiff/p … c71b404f7f) and requested a merge.
