Yesterday I put 2 monitors on my Thinkpad T430. I then disabled the laptop mintor and used xrandr --output HDMI1 --auto --output VGA1 --auto --right-of HDMI1. With this I had two different displays. Everything worked as expected.
Today I tried to do the same to no avail. Both monitors display the same. The xrandr command input gives no feedback. I installed Arandr and anytime I place one screen on the left or right and click apply, nothing happens. Except the moved screen returns to its initial position.
If I do the same with the laptop display, it's properly placed and has a distinct display.
I'm using Awesome WM.
I'd be happy to add more info, right now I don't know what to add. I did pacman -Syu recently, as such my system and xrandr should be updated.
Is there something possibly flawed with my config or similar and how can I possibly fix this issue?

I'm not particularly familiar with AwesomeWM, but I know it does try to "micromanage" quite a bit. Could you try with a simpler WM or no WM to see if Aweome's configs could be relevant?

If it's not related to awesome, please post the outputs of
type xrandr
xrandr -q
