I'm not sure if this is in the right forum/website, don't hesitate to tell me if this is the wrong place and where I should go with this problem. When I first installed Arch, I thought that the frequent crashes I was getting were due to the xf86-video-intel driver I was using. The simple fix was to disable acceleration (I don't know what this is referring to and I can't seem to find this information). The benefit to this is that the crashing stops, but I didn't know that this caused problems regarding performance, until I saw this Reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … ideointel/ After switching the drivers and relocating the old conf file, I was amazed at how much better the performance was, until my system started crashing again. After further investigation, I found out that "acceleration" was the culprit, and regardless of what AccelMethod I choose, as long as it's not "none", the system crashes. If I delete all config files from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and uninstall xf86-video-intel, the problem remains. intel-ucode is installed and configured for microcode updating.

journalctl -r -p 4
from the moment I boot the system to the moment it crashes. It references a bug in a driver, but I think this may be unrelated to the problem.

"it crashes" - how?
segfault? in some client (incl. like "gnome-shell")? or in the x11 server? the kernel?
do you get a core dumped?
Offline
I don't get a core dump. It seems to be the kernel that's crashing. The whole system becomes unresponsive. The sysrq keys don't work. I can't switch TTY's. There's nothing about the crash in the Xorg logs. I don't know if it's a segfault.

Post full the dmeg output, cherry picking does not help. Also post the output of 'lspci -nnk'.

You didn't need to reverse the journal output, it makes it harder to read, as if you get an answer before you make a question. That said, the journal doesn't show anything particularly interesting regarding the crashes.
There are a few things you could try, the first is fully updating your system and setup the early microcode update. As a side note, you don't seem to be using an initramfs, are you doing something "special"?
Another thing to test is to not load any virtualbox modules and make sure you don't have any custom xorg .conf files and see if you can reproduce the crashes. Try to find a way to reliably reproduce the crashes.

To find out if the problem is kernel related, try to use the kernels 4.9, 4.4 and 3.16.

I'm not running gnome, I'm running a custom desktop environment. It's just X, openbox and a few basic utilities.

I am using an initramfs, I'm not doing anything special.
I'll try unloading the virtualbox modules. I've already tested it without any custom xorg.conf files. Though I can't find an immediately reliable way to reproduce the crashes, I often just play Minecraft for a while to get the system to crash, though it'll crash regardless of what programs I'm running.
I'll try out the older kernels.

(gnome might have implied wayland and xwayland)
Smells glamor related?
=> How's the intel (not modesetting) driver behavior with either
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
or
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
Offline
Interesting insight @Seth. Both options behave the same. I do have wayland installed as a dependancy of gtk3, kwayland(dependancy of breeze(has no dependencies. I don't know why it's installed.)) and mesa. I do believe I have xwayland installed as part of Xorg, but I couldn't find the package on my system. I'm going to uninstall breeze and kwayland.
I now have gtk3 ("gnome may have implied wayland") and mesa ("which provides the DRI driver for 3D acceleration." - wiki, intel_graphics) installed, which rely on wayland. Both seem relevant to the problem. When I looked up glamor, I couldn't get much info, other than "Glamor is available as a 2D acceleration method implemented through OpenGL" from the ATI wiki page.

The modesetting driver by default uses glamor for acceleration , see man modesetting for details.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Don't forget to setup the microcode update if you haven't done so already https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microcode

The sheer presence of "wayland" and "xwayland" does not imply their usage. Afaik openbox doesn't support wayland.
If you run "loginctl session-status" from an X11 session it should say "type x11".
You probably also do not login via GDM, do you?
Both options behave the same
Means "crash", right?
Do you use a (GL) compositor? (eg. compton) - maybe dump the entire session-status (all process list) from your regular X11 session.
And yes, ensure to install AND enable "intel-ucode" (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mi … de_updates)

So far, after downgrading the kernel to version 3.16, I don't seem to be running into any problems at all after 6 hours of use. I'm going to wait 24 hours of course, but I feel this may be a good sign because in the log of the previous crash, it seemed ho have only taken an hour.
The microcode updates have already been set up.
I know it doesn't imply their usage, but I do know mesa is a driver, so it's used a lot and gtk is a toolkit, so it's used a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if wayland gets used sometimes. I actually get Service: login; type tty; class user, but I assume that's because I first boot into the TTY, then login to bash, then run startx to start the X server. I don't use GDM. It means a lot more than just crash. The performance seems to be identical, regardless of the driver or AccelMethod I use, as long as it's not none. I do not use a compositor as far as I know, certainly not compton.

steam pops out ... does it happen w/o running steam?

After downgrading the kernel to version 3.16, enabling acceleration and not crashing for about a day, I'm confident that it's a kernel issue. I think the next step might be to compile a kdump kernel, though I'm not sure. Now that I've thought about it a bit, I'm going to update my kernel back to the problematic one and reboot with quiet mode turned off, since I think I have it set to quiet mode by default and forgot about it. Maybe this is why there is so little info in the journal? I've never dealt with issues regarding the kernel before and I'm not too sure how.
Yeah. I actually only just installed steam today.

You have found one good version, that's good progress. If you can narrow it down to one bad and one good you should then bisect the kernel and find which commit breaks things and then open a bug report upstream.

I've found the kernel version where the bug is introduced, but I couldn't find which commit breaks the bug when checking on GitHub, because I couldn't find a list of commits from before version 4.1-rc1 I've looked online for information on submitting bug reports, but the results were a little fuzzy and usually outdated. It seems to be insider information mostly, but I've never been active in kernel development before. I honestly don't know where Linux is being developed (On GitHub or kernel.org?) or how to develop for it, since there seems to be little to no definitive guide on this. The one guide that I once saw looking on Google was from 2003, so I don't know how relevant it still is.

It's kernel.org , bugtracker is here : https://bugzilla.kernel.org/ .
Changelogs are at https://cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v4.x/ , although i don't see changelogs for RCs.
I also found (with help from phoronix) the annoucement for 4.1-rc1 : http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kern … 01263.html
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

You go to kernel.org, checkout the git repo and bisect. You'll see that you can go back much further back than 4.1-rc1. As for reporting bugs depends on the component but for graphics related problems it most probably goes into a freedesktop bug tracker.
You git clone either https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … table.git/ or https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … linux.git/ and bisect between a good and a bad point, once you find the bad commit you report the bug.
