kernel26ck - moving to 2.6.17-ck1

This is for anyone using the kernel26ck package in community.

The 2.6.17 kernel source was released today, followed very closely by the 2.6.17-ck1 patchset. I have just built the kernel26ck-2.6.17.ck1-1 package, and I will upload it as soon It's been tested. The package incorporates all config changes from the kernel26-2.6.17-1 package in the testing repo.

As with all community packages, kernel26ck depends only on packages in the current or extra repos, and therefore can only use mkinitrd to generate the required image, unlike kernel26 in testing, which uses both mkinitrd and mkinitcpio. For the same reason, kernel26ck has also been compiled with gcc 4.0.

As and when kernel26, mkinitcpio, and gcc 4.1 move to current, I will rebuild kernel26ck accordingly, at all times replicating any current and future changes made to kernel26.

I welcome any feedback on this, so please feel free to add any comments to this thread.

Because you can't move gcc on its own. Please read Arch News going back to 23 May for a rundown of everything currently in testing.

when will the move happen, because i'd need a initramfs to be able to conveniently load my custom dsdt for my buggy bios. i know that it's possible to use it on an initrd too, but it's just not handy.

This thread concerns a specific package in community. I am not a developer, so I do not know when the packages currently in testing will move to current. Please read about mkinitcpio regarding your dsdt issue.

I use custom kernel based on kernek26ck PKGBUILD. Nothing special, just add vesafb-tng (vanilla vesafb doesn't work fine for me) and made some changes in config.
mkinitcpio seems to work fine - i've use it for 3 days and there's no kernel panic or something. I did only 2 things: recompile klibc with 2.6.16-ck sources (need to change version in PKGBUILD) and play little bit with mkinitcpio.conf for image size minimization. My new init image's weights twice less than old (created with mkinitramfs)!
BTW, mkinitcpio and dependencies are in current now...it's time to switch.

I've used the Arch klibc package with kernel26ck and various custom beyond kernels, with no need for a rebuild. I'd be interested to know why you found it necessary.

kernel26ck 2.6.17.ck1-2 will be in community very shortly.

Yes it's not necessary, but usually I've build all packages from ABS on my testing laptop.

well you get a lot more patches inb beyond

i even got Kernel26ck1-2 with mkinitcpio, after removing scsi and sata( all my discs are ide). it mafde my startup time a blazing 8 seconds

kernel26ck provides all patches from kernel26 and -ck patchset only.
Kernel26beyond provides -ck patchset plus suspend2, vesafb-tng, reiser4, fbsplash and and many other stuff.
kernel26ck is in AUR, here: kernel26ck

Read the descriptions of ck and beyond for comparison.
For CVS, as with any Community package, follow the CVS link on the Package Details page in the AUR, or if you have an up-to-date abs tree, it will be in /var/abs/community/kernels/kernel26ck.

ck kernel does include: the arch default patches; the performance patchset by Con Kolivas. In Con Kolivas page you can find many details.

In general, ck kernel does include many, safe performance enhancements, but does not include any new feature. On the contrary beyond includes both ck performance enhancements and lots of features (vesafbng, reiser4, suspend2, unionfs etc etc).

If you do not require any extra feature but you want a desktop-oriented, very stable kernel, ck is an ideal choice.

I don't need much more then the orginal kernel has, I even don't neet most of it, but I do like more Desktop orinted kernel. So I guess CK is good for me, Say, How can I compile it to make it load much faster has you guys said?

You can compile it through abs (enable the community repo and modify the PKGBUILD).
For kernel compilation through ABS refer to the guides in the wiki.

can I compile kernel 2.6.17 with beyond patches and mkinitcpio through abs? is it as easy as modifing PKGBUILD file?

I don't know why, but the current 2.6.16-beyond kernel runs slow on my 2.5ghz P4 !! is beyond kernel broken at the moment?

Edit: Nevermind I missed the latest update to Kernel26-beyond, now it's 2.6.17

hii, I am having a problem with mkinitcpio.
When making my own kernel, or even download yours kernel, after doing pacman -s kernel26ck, I am doing mkinitcpio -k linux-2.6.17-ck -g /boot/kernel26ck.img
and when booting my system, it gets stuck. and say it can init the root disk, What is the problem?
my .conf file contain this
HOOKS="autodetect base udev ide filesystems"

do you have an ide or sata drive?
the following config worked with my sata + ide drive system.

HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide sata filesystems"

Try re-arranging the order of your config to look like the one above as the hooks are executed in the exact order that they appear in the conf file.

Hello

I've got a problem with this new version of the Beyond Kernel.
When I try to use suspend2, with the commande hibernate, everything seems to work fine.

But when I start the computer, it boots normally ( It doesn't load the suspend2 image ).
There is this strange message:
"Unable to find swap-space signature"
He is unable to mount the swap partition, and I need to run these commands to enable my swap: mkswap and swapon

I'm on a IBM T43 laptop, and suspend worker well before the update.
May the problem come from the new mkinitcpio ?

First, this thread is about ck, not beyond. Second, suspend2 works great with mkinitcpio, if configured correctly, read the wiki.

You want to use "-k 2.6.17-ck". You do not need the "linux" prefix in there. It should mirror the $(uname -r) output on a system. Still, I guess that's an important error case to check. :oops:
