[Gnome] Gestures

Hi all,

Yesterday I found out that Gnome has built-in gestures that should work directly with libinput, without kernel hacks, touchegg, or manual configuration. See for example the image viewer, that should have pinch-to-zoom (Menu -> keyboard shortcuts). However, they do not work for me.

After some googling I tried some things. First I verified that indeed libinput is handling my touchpad. So I went along and tried:

# libinput-debug-events
[lots of output, containing:]
 event10 GESTURE_PINCH_UPDATE +6.52s	2 -1.83/ 0.00 (-4.92/ 0.00 unaccelerated) 1.81 @ -0.19
 event10 GESTURE_PINCH_UPDATE +6.52s	2 -1.22/ 0.00 (-3.28/ 0.00 unaccelerated) 1.83 @ 0.08
 event10 GESTURE_PINCH_UPDATE +6.53s	2 -1.22/ 0.00 (-3.28/ 0.00 unaccelerated) 1.84 @ -0.26
 event10 GESTURE_PINCH_UPDATE +6.54s	2 0.00/ 0.00 ( 0.00/ 0.00 unaccelerated) 1.85 @ -0.06
 event10 GESTURE_PINCH_UPDATE +6.55s	2 -1.22/ 0.00 (-3.28/ 0.00 unaccelerated) 1.86 @ -0.06
 event10 GESTURE_PINCH_UPDATE +6.55s	2 0.00/ 0.00 ( 0.00/ 0.00 unaccelerated) 1.87 @ -0.06
 event10 GESTURE_PINCH_UPDATE +6.56s	2 -0.61/ 0.00 (-1.64/ 0.00 unaccelerated) 1.88 @ -0.12
 event10 GESTURE_PINCH_UPDATE +6.57s	2 0.00/-0.60 ( 0.00/-1.64 unaccelerated) 1.89 @ 0.04

So libinput recognizes the events, but Gnome does not respond to them. Both the X and the Wayland session do not work. Blocking the psmouse module in the kernel also does not help (that seems to work on Ubuntu).

My question is therefore: does anybody have them working? Did you have to do anything special for it and if yes, what?

Re: [Gnome] Gestures

As far I know, gestures only work on touch screen devices with libinput, they don't work on touchpads.

According to the release notes of Gnome 3.18 "multitouch gestures, such as pinch to zoom and rotate, were first introduced in GNOME 3.14. However, it has only been possible to use them with a touchscreen. Now, in 3.18, these gestures can also be used with touchpads."

So it should work, but it does not... Moreover, I think using four fingers to switch workspaces on a touch screen is not that useful, but that is an opinion.

For the record, I did not mention in the initial post that I use a Dell XPS 13 laptop. All the hardware is recognized correctly, and after some digging I could not find any driver related issues.
