Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

I recently Syu'd and now whenever I plug in/unplug the AC power supply on my Dell XPS 9550, the whole system hangs and I have to force the computer off by holding the power button. I've looked at

journalctl --boot=-1

but I see nothing out of the ordinary. How should I approach this issue?

Re: Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

What packages were upgraded? Are you using TLP, or some other power manager? Can you SSH in when the machine is unresponsive?

Re: Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

Here are the packages installed/updated recently. Thinking about it a little more, the newly installed packages could be causing the issue instead of the -Syu, but I'm not sure.

Re: Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

SSH clients also stop responding when I unplug the power supply.

Re: Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

Switch to a linux console, log in, run "dmesg -w" plug AC and hope for some error messages before the freeze.
Do you have intel-ucode installed and enabled?

Re: Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

Nothing at all with dmesg -w. Cursor just stops blinking

I do not have intel-ucode installed.

Re: Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

Installed intel-ucode, added intel-ucode.img to my /boot, and added the extra initrd line to my .pref bootloader entry. Nothing appears to have changed.

I can verify that microcode was updated:

┌─[griefcake][~]
└──▪ dmesg | grep microcode

Re: Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

Ok, before debugging the kernel (nasty), you would check on the power managers.
You should really know which power managers you're using, because you installed and in doubt activated and configured them? Ideally you regarded this page in the process: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Power_management

You may also want to paste a complete dmesg dump (before un/plugging AC ;-)

Re: Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

I've never manually touched anything related to power management. It's just always worked on its own before, straight from initial install/setup. Is this something that my DE (Budgie) would usually be handing for me completely? It has an entry in the Settings for Power and everything related to power (eg. battery indicator) has "just worked."

I've also now noticed that my computer fails to respond when I try to bring it out of a suspend.

Here's my dmesg prior to unplugging AC. Looking at it again, there are a few errors related to ACPI that are (with my limited knowledge) suspect.

No idea, but there's a simple way to try: don't boot into the graphical target and see how the behavior is without that.
If it's fine, startx into something trivial (an xterm, maybe openbox) and test the behavior there.

This looks fishy:

[ 2.479321] acpi PNP0C0B:03: Failed to set initial power state

Why did you change "intel_idle.max_cstate=1" and "acpi_osi=Linux"?

Re: Laptop freezes when AC power supply is plugged/unplugged

After some thinking I remembered that I had updated my BIOS a few days ago. I downgraded it and lo and behold, the freezing stopped! However, I would still like to get to the bottom of the issue -- why does it present itself with the newer BIOS? I think it would be a great learning experience for me to delve into it, and maybe hopefully contribute a resolution somewhere.

With the BIOS downgraded, I get the following set of dmesg errors when I plug/unplug the AC power, but no freeze:

[ 477.876872] ACPI Error: [\_SB_.PCI0.LPCB.H_EC.CHRG] Namespace lookup failure, AE_NOT_FOUND (20170119/psargs-363)
[ 477.876905] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed [\PNOT] (Node ffff8802b50d5370), AE_NOT_FOUND (20170119/psparse-543)
[ 477.876922] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed [\_SB.AC._PSR] (Node ffff8802b50e8488), AE_NOT_FOUND (20170119/psparse-543)
[ 477.876954] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, Error reading AC Adapter state (20170119/ac-128)

(this occurs identically on both plug and unplug)

This issue presents itself before I enter a graphical target, as well as in SSH client sessions.

In response to your question about "intel_idle.max_cstate=1" and "acpi_osi=Linux", I was following the recommendations provided here:
