[Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

I have an issue for a while now that I hoped would be fixed with the other issue of 4.11 (that was now fixed in 4.11.5) but it seems to be another problem: my Asus PL80Jt notebook boots the kernel as it should but in the middle of the boot sequence something seems to lock up the CPU at 100% usage. I can get to the login prompt and depending on how fast I enter my credentials I either get a login timeout (after 60 secs) or I only get the "Last login..." message but no shell prompt. Alt+SysReq+REISUB let's me reboot as expected but no other real interaction is possible.

I cannot find anything obvious in the journal but I am not very familiar of debugging such an issue.

For the time being I run an 4.10.13 kernel which I blocked from updating in pacman.conf. Testing this issue I use a linux-ck kernel (prebuilt from rebo-ck.com) but it also happens with the stock 4.11.x kernels.

EDIT: Kernel 4.12-rc6 no longer has this issue so it can be assumed it will also be fixed in 4.12 final.

Re: [Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

Try disabling tlp and reboot and see if it still happens. Top should also tell you which process is using the cpu(s).

Re: [Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

I tried that already. Also i have tried to uninstall virtualbox-host-modules (just a shot in the dark) with no change.

I cannot run top as do not get to a shell prompt.

EDIT: I also tried acpi=off as boot flag. It seems to boot fine then but my keyboard is not working so it is no use either. But that may lead someone to the problem?!

You have to say what you have tried already and the result you got, this is not a game of twenty questions.

I'm sorry, I forgot to put that already in the first post. But the list in my second post is complete of what I already tried so far.

Re: [Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

I suggest trying 4.12-rc6 should be released in the next few hours if that is affected by the same issue then bisect between 4.10 and 4.11 to identify the bad commit.

Re: [Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

Ok then, quick test you can try is using init=/bin/bash in your kernel parameters line and see if that still hangs with linux 4.11, if it does it is definitely kernel related, otherwise it might be something you are starting or some kernel module you are trying to load.

If it is kernel related try loq's suggestion.

Re: [Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

Intermediate result: using init=/bin/bash in kernel parameters gives me a proper bash shell. At least I am saved from bisecting the kernel. Now off to the hunt for what is breaking my boot. :-/

Re: [Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

First try and I found the problem: it's the nouveau kernel module. If I disable it via modprobe.blacklist=nouveau kernel parameter it boots fine (note that my notebook has Nvidia Optimus).

I still am a bit lost on what to do next. I haven't used the Nvidia chip since 2011 and I am not planning to do this so all I need the nouveau module for is to use PRIME to automatically disable the chip and prevent it from power consumption. Should I use bumblebee instead in this case? Or is this a bug that needs to be reported upstream? I use Linux daily but I never had any issues like that so I don't know what is the correct path.

EDIT: Currently my notebook is compiling linux-mainline AUR package (4.12-RC5) to check if the bug has been fixed there.

Re: [Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

If the problem is in a module then it is a kernel problem, you'll have to bisect to find the bad commit but at least you can narrow it down. I guess there should be a mailing list where you can ask for guidance before you start bisecting.

I don't have experience with nouveau but I'd say you really should try to disable anything you may have configured regarding extra power savings/disabling the nvidia card.

Re: [Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

Searching through nouveau's bug tracker, I found https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101368 which seems to be the same issue I experience (though I have not yet tried all of the proposed steps the error description quite matches my problem). There it is also asked to bisect the kernel which I will do, when back at home with power supply at hand.

Thanks so far for all the support to find out what's happening here!

Re: [Solved] [Kernel 4.11.x] CPU 100% due to nouveau with GT218M

I just compiled 4.12-rc6 and it works again there. But I only compiled it with my currently loaded modules (which also includes nouveau). To be sure it is fixed in 4.12 I will now start another compilation of the full kernel and check if this still leads to a successful boot.

4.12-rc6 full kernel also does not show this problem, so I have to wait for it to be released before doing the next kernel update. (first post also updated)
