Problems with Intel video on Lenovo laptop

Hi everyone.

I've been using Lenovo L450 for almost 2 years and I've always had problems with it, especially with its graphics card (Intel HD Graphics 5500). I tried different solutions and then used a laptop for a while to test how it works, but the problems with Intel graphics occurred again and again, so I decided to create a topic here just in case if someone had such issues and was able to solve them and/or can suggest a solution.

I'm updating my Arch every month, the current kernel version is 4.11.3-1, there are generally 2 problems which bother me much:

  1. Performance. I'm not sure if it is a problem with my configuration, probably the graphic card is just to weak to handle my Acer CB280HK display (4K display), but the performance in overall is quite bad, even resizing the window is slow. If I use some text editors like Atom or Visual Studio Code, it becomes even more lagging and the CPU usage raises to 100% when I type something there and/or edit a text (so I'm using Vim instead). I thought that the video acceleration does not work, but according to `glxinfo`, the "direct rendering" is turned on.

  2. At least once a week I observe a crash related to the intel driver, so the system hangs completely and does not respond. In such cases I have to do a hard reset and check the logs afterwards.

As (1) seems to be a general issue with intel graphics card performance and has nothing to do with my configuration, I would like to dedicate this topic to (2). However, if you have any tips regarding (1), they're also welcomed.

Back to (2), the last crash occurred today and the logs are basically the same as always:

What I have tried so far:

  1. Adding `i915.enable_rc6=0` -- unfortunately did not help. The last crash occurred when this option has been set, so it seems that it does not have any effect on these crashes.

  2. Adding `i915.enable_execlists=0` -- also did not help.

  3. Changing acceleration method from `sna` to `uxa` reduces the overall GPU performance, so I could not work for a week using such configuration. So I think it's related to (1).

  4. Turning off the hardware acceleration -- the same as above, the performance degradation was so huge, that I could not work with this option set. I believe it's also more related to (1).

Is there something I can do to fix these crashes without turning off the hardware acceleration? NOTE: I do not claim that turning off the hardware acceleration will fix the crashes, it may or may not fix the crashes. But I did not this as a long term option as the performance without the hardware acceleration was quite bad.

Try removing xf86-video-intel as well as any xorg.config having to do with your graphics adapter. xf86-video-intel is virtually unmaintained and seems to have a few problems with newer intel chipsets. Doing so will make xorg fallback to the modesetting driver, which sees far more active development on intel's side.

Other than that, regarding the slowness and heavy cpu usage during normal usage: What WM/DE are you using? Do you have any form of compositing enabled? If you haven't try to enable it (if you have try to disable it) if you use a WM that is incapable of compositing itself you might want to use compton or similar.

Oh, I forgot to mention, that I also tried modesetting, unfortunately modesetting is also really slow (even slower than intel uxa). After you mentioned it, I decided to try it again (as the last time I tried it was in December), but than I realized that actually I'm using modesetting right now (I think I switched to it several months ago to test performance and forgot to switch back to intel). In other words, modesetting is also slow and it turns out that modesetting crashes sometimes as well.

I'm using cinnamon. Normally I don't use composition, but after you suggested it, I decided to turn it on and test a bit. Unfortunately it does not speed up anything, sometimes the CPU usage (when I resize windows or type something in editors like Atom) still reaches 100%. But when the compositing is enabled, these desktop effects slow everything down even more.

If you switched to modesetting, yet still have a xorg conf that sets up UXA or SNA you are going to cripple your modesetting, since setting the AccelMethod string to any of these values will disable the GLAMOR acceleration the modesetting driver would use. Post your Xorg log

Nothing strange there either from what I see, another general thing that might cause issues and especially Broadwell CPU's were notorious for, are your microcode updates set up correctly?

Yes, I installed intel-ucode right after the first installation of Arch and updated it regularly (along with other packages), and of course I added the corresponding parameter to my GRUB configuration.

You may want to try without the "corresponding parameter" in GRUB. I've gone through what you're going through and though it may not help with your Lenovo, it worked with this Dell and very similar hardware. Worth a shot?

You mean removing "/intel-ucode.img" from grub config? Not sure if it is a good idea, I think that the microcode updates are set up correctly as I can definitely see them in dmesg output.

A quick googler for that stack trace -- https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99295 Apparently it doesn't happen with the 4.9 series of kernels, so trying linux-lts might be another option and a fix for it hasn't landed in any of the 4.11 ones yet.

Hm... Seems to be a known issue then. Judging from the latest comments, some people still experience the problem though (even if they apply a patch on top 4.9). So the only thing I can do here is basically wait until the fix is done and/or try to fix it myself, i.e. there are no quick solution which would with 100% solve the issue. Yeah.. it's a pity.

Anyway, thank you guys for the useful information you provided for your suggestions regarding these problems.

So far the conclusion seems to be:

  • The crash might be fixed with the latest patches, mentioned in the link provided by V1del, i.e. there seems to be a bug/regression in the kernel source code.

  • The overall performance issues seem to be a general problem (the videocard itself is not powerful enough to handle 4K); modesetting with Glamor is almost twice as slow as intel driver with sna.

I'm reading that as the issue has popped up with the 4.10 kernel and a fix hasn't landed in a stable kernel since, it apparently wasn't present in the 4.9 series, so if you haven't tested that yet, that might still be something to look at.
