Thanks for your patience.

The current issue appears to be simply that the service is not starting.

systemctl --user enable psd.service
Failed to enable unit: No such file or directory

As I mentioned above, I have the psd service files so it's unclear why psd isn't starting through systemctl, whatever the combination of commands I use.

Sorry I can't be of more help regarding troubleshooting. This is all I know at the moment.

I installed from yaourt "profile-sync-daemon-git".

The above command doesn't find anything. I had originally installed from pacman, just the standard package, but that caused problems with the pam_systemd, xdg fails etc. like other's experienced. I'm off to bed just now but I'll try the original again tomorrow and reply back with the results.

Please build the stable version with makepkg not an AUR helper 'makepkg -srci' will do. Yes, one of the best movies of the 90s!

So what was the problem? You mentioned that you initially built using an AUR helper, correct? When you said you just built from source does that mean with makepkg or from github, make, make install?

I originally installed straight from pacman, this caused the logind to mess stuff up similar to other folks problems. Quite strange.

Then I installed from AUR which didn't let me start the service.

And now I've cloned from github, no issues

I am still confused as to why this is... you can of course install from source but that defeats the purposes of using package manager. I recommend that you uninstall psd (stop it first then make uninstall as root). Then download from the AUR, build with `makepkg -src` and then `pacman -U package.tar.xz`. It works!

I'm okay with the git to be honest, I understand the benefits of using package manager but I have few git installs now and manage them with no problems

One last question, though
I was looking at the wiki again and while wrapping my head around what psd actually does, I found this:

Note: Some browsers such as Chrome/Chromium, Firefox (since v21), Midori, and Rekonq actually keeps their cache directories separately from their profile directory. It is not within the scope of profile-sync-daemon to modify this behavior; users are encouraged to refer to the Chromium tweaks#Cache in tmpfs section for Chromium and to the Firefox on RAM article for several workarounds. An easy fix is to move the various browsers' cache directory from their default location (e.g. /home/$USER/.cache/<browser>/<profile>/) to the corresponding profile directory, e.g. /home/$USER/.mozilla/firefox/<profile>/cache, and then symlink the new cache folder back to its original location. This way, profile-sync-daemon will automatically take into account the cache folder too.

Has this been resolved? I want to have my browser cache being stored in ram to speed things up as much as possible. I was going to edit my fstab with a tmpfs pointing to my .cache folder but don't want to be messing things up

The resolution is the tmpfs mount which doesn't mess up anything in my experience.

Hi graysky,

Everything has been set up nicely now.

Put this in my fstab:

tmpfs   /home/jamie/.cache/chromium     tmpfs   noatime,nodev,nosuid,size=700M  0       0

Rebooted and did a check:

$ findmnt --target ~/.cache/chromium
TARGET                                        SOURCE FSTYPE OPTIONS
/home/jamie/.cache/chromium tmpfs  tmpfs  rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,size=716800k

Detailing for other's who could benefit too
This means I can stretch another year out of my already 7 year old laptop hehe. Thanks for your patience!

i'm on a dell chromebook with silvermont dual core & 4gb ram

i patched uksm into linux-lts-ck for the RAM benefits. i try out every tweak to improve
performance due to its limited resources.

by using thunderbird as only an IMAP client with psd and storing its cache with psd,
it moved from "this is going to be really annoying but the situation calls for it" category
into the "tolerable" category!

running firefox with 20 tabs open & thunderbird takes up 1gb ram on a lxde environment.

definitely worth checking out if you have a similar setup.

I've been experiencing some problems with psd. It crashes my xdg often and certain things that use the cache become slower too. For instance, using hover zoom becomes problematic with certain sites, perhaps this is just coincidence but imgur just doesn't work anymore with hover zoom and I suspect that it's psd.

Anyway, I'd like to stop using it yet I have no psd.service, I installed with git and now I don't know how to stop/uninstall/delete it. Can you point me in the right direction please?

You installed with git meaning you used the git package from the AUR or you just make make install from a git pull? You can run make uninstall and it should capture everything just be sure you stop is first. Also remember that there is a psd.service but it is a user service not a system service.

After a crash it seems that my chromium profile was completely borked.

Chromium starts and works fine, but look at the result when it is started:

All extensions are gone! The rest seems to work fine...

I have several chromium-backup-crashrecovery-* folder, but rotating them does not solve the issue. How can I proceed?

EDIT: oh wait wait. Could it be that I updated chromium to 59? Maybe at the same time, I'm not sure.

Maybe I'm missing something but it doesn't seem to be working for me. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

I did see this in my logs every time I tried to start the psd.service:

I also tried without USE_OVERLAYFS and had the same results. I don't imagine it would have an impact but I am running on btrfs raid with compression enabled and I'm using chromium-vaapi-bin from AUR as a browser.

@OdinEidolon - Not sure... the oldest recovery snapshot should give the last-known-good profile. I updated to 59 without issue
@emphire - I don't know about the btrfs piece as I am not a fan of that filesystem. Can you try to minimize the variables here:

1) Stop psd.
2) Edit the config and just manage your primary browser initially.
Same result when starting?

Thanks graysky, I tried with just Chromium and it has the same error but when I try with just Firefox enabled it works. Any ideas on how I can narrow down the issue with Chromium?

I am using chromium (from the repos) as my primary browser without issue... I have not encountered this before. Are you certain that /run/user/... is not being created for chromium but it is for firefox?

Sorry, my mistake, I had a chromium window still open on another desktop. I had an issue with adding epiphany but found there was a process running in the background called epiphany-search. I killed it and now everything works with BROWSERS commented out.

You're welcome... systemd logging makes it tough for you to see but psd won't sync be design is browsers are running while you try to do it.
