Looks like the --filter argument is in the main line of the xrandr repo here: git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/xrandr
This is potentially very cool for pixel dense screens. I, however, can't seem to get the thing to compile. I'm getting the following error during ./autoconf.sh
/home/xxx/Packages/xrandr/configure: line 10514: syntax error near unexpected token `XRANDR,'
/home/xxx/Packages/xrandr/configure: line 10514: `PKG_CHECK_MODULES(XRANDR, xrandr >= 1.5 xrender x11 xproto >= 7.0.17)'Anyone know how to fix that?
Thanks!

Seems like PKG_CHECK_MODULES macro is not found. This is defined in usr/share/aclocal/pkg.m4 file from pkg-config package. Do you have this installed?

Yes! That was it.
./xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode "3840x2160" --scale "0.5x0.5" --filter nearestIt's glorious!
