anything-sync-daemon - keep ANYTHING in tmpfs and sync'ed

Ok, this is weird:
- after starting chromium and loading my starting page

Anything-sync-daemon v5.73 on Arch Linux

 Systemd service is currently active.
 Systemd resync service is currently active.
 Overlayfs v23 is currently active.

Asd will manage the following per /run/asd.conf settings:

 owner/group id:     azure/1000
 target to manage:   /home/azure/.cache/chromium
 sync target:        /home/azure/.cache/.chromium-backup_asd
 tmpfs target:       /tmp/asd-azure/home/azure/.cache/chromium
 dir size:           29M
 overlayfs size:     492K

After loading another page:

Why is dir size increasing? Shouldn't only the overlay size increase until stuff is flushed to disc? I'm still having this problem of disappearing caches btw.

I expected only overlayfs size to grow until it's synced, if that's wrong, then I guess it's all right.

There is definitely something fishy going on here, though, but for some reason only for chromium. My cache just resetted itself again:

target to manage:   /home/azure/.cache/chromium

I just checked and sync target dir size is actually 89M - but it only shows 30M?

Meanwhile, vivaldi cache is working as expected, at least so far.

edit: I tried copying the full cache from the sync target to tmpfs target and starting chromium - it dropped cache. Is there maybe some sort of "corruption" it's detecting?
edit2: disabled syncing for chromium, replaced cache again and it dropped it again. I guess syncing chromium cache is not viable for some reason.

On the initial setup, the overlayfs size should be 0. As you write data, it will grow but should never exceed the dir size. I dunno about cache; I just mount ~/.cache to tmpfs in my /etc/fstab and let it get cleared on reboot since it's just temp files anyway. Does chromium have a cache purge option that does it?

It doesn't seem to have automatic cache purging, only manual. Besides, it shouldn't be purging caches that are only around 80Mb in size. I also don't have RAM errors which would explain why the cache seems to get corrupted in tmpfs but not on hdd. I'll follow the situation a little for now. Clearing cache on reboot is not really an option for me, because of my slow internet connection, there is a real boost in loading speed when keeping the cache. I guess my SSD will have to suffer a bit more for now.

Well, if you're using psd to manage the profile itself, would muck up things if you created a new dir in that and symlinked the live cache to it?

mkdir ~/.config/chromium/MYCACHE
ln -s ~/.config/chromium/MYCACHE ~/.cache/chromium

I wonder if that would work? Make sure you stop both psd and asd before you try it and always backup your profile to a nice safe tarball.

I'm having some trouble getting asd to work with nginx/php-fpm. For some reason php-fpm can't read the asd'ed scripts. Nginx spits out this:

EDIT: I've tried adding the temp folders to the basedir, no dice... However, if I run php-fpm as root, it seems to work, which makes me feel it's a permission issue? (I've tested on a simple phpinfo() page and it still won't work, so I don't think I have the same issue as berot.

Overlayfs or not? What are the permissions on the directory and does the user running the webserver have rights to rwx them?

@graysky: Overlayfs is enabled (but disabling it does not help), permissions to the directory are rwx for the user running nginx (http - which is also running php-fpm). Static files are being served correctly.

@nariox - If it isn't a permissions issue, I don't know what within that package is angry about the symlink or the overlayfs mount.

@graysky: who knows. Executing these php scripts with php as 'http' works just fine. This just adds to the mystery...
I wish I had the time to properly debug it. The logs for php-fpm show nothing. The only log that is showing anything is nginx, and that message is hardly helpful.
Well, I'll keep an eye for a solution, if I find it, I'll post it here.

An update about this: seems to actually work, I haven't lost any caches so far, so I'd say it's unlikely to happen again. Now I wonder what the difference between the two scripts is. I know it says something about psd having more checks in place or something, wouldn't it make sense to introduces (some of) them into asd as well?

Hello,
I asd one of my folder that contains Latex files and other symlinks. I use the default configuration file. Recently, I don't know why when I open a file in vim, I cannot save it due to error E212. I can force it to save and after that everything is fine. All other file in that folder cannot be *touch* unless I force it first. Does anyone know the reason why? Thanks.

syncing /var/log creates problem with pacman, (during installing/upgrading), one example below

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
roundcubemail: /var/log exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

I'm looking at wiki page, and I cannot find the answer to my question.

Does asd copies everything from sync targets to tmpfs or only on first usage? I'm asking because I might mount ~8GB folder into asd and pulling everything would be trashing my own PC for no good reason. The folder in question is my google-drive-ocamlfuse and I'd like to be able to move fast on it and not wait too much for sync with google servers.

@nmiculinic - Yes, with USE_OVERLAYFS disabled, everything you define in the WHATTOSYNC array will be copied. With USE_UVERLAYFS enabled, only changes are written. See the man or wiki page for more.

Ok, thank you for you response. I'm trying to keep some folders in sync with cloud storage and am using grive for sync. I've made following unit file:

Is the After=asd.service enough to ensure that all symbolic links are set up and that are no race conditions in the system?

Do you know if there's an easy way to get systemd services to start after asd is done the initial syncing?

I have some suggestions if they're not too hard to implement:

1. Add a user systemd service that can be run with systemctl --user start asd (a bit like psd)
2. Add an option to only start/stop specific mounts. ie: systemctl start asd@varlog

And is there a way to get the getty@tty*.service files to wait until has finished syncing?
When I boot up my computer and log in immediately when the login prompt appears, the syncing is not yet complete and most programs relying on the synced data will error out.
I found out that adding

Before=getty@tty1.service getty@tty2.service getty@tty3.service getty@tty4.service getty@tty5.service getty@tty6.service

to asd.service would probably help, but is this the proper way to achieve this or am I overlooking something?

So I have a folder that is synced using ASD, as there is a file in that folder i update every minute. I have set the asd-resync.timer for 5m (eventually want to use 5hr). After I start ASD, the folder is created in tmpfs (/dev/shm). To check if it all works, i use inotifywait to watch that directory. My expectation is that the directory will be "sycned" every 5 minutes; even though it is updated every minute in ram. However my results are that i see that folder/file synced every minute.

For example:
File that is updated every minute: /var/log/syslog
asd.conf:
WHATTOSYNC=('/var/log')
VOLATILE="/dev/shm"
USE_OVERLAYFS="yes"

Output of `inotifywait -m -r -e modify,close_write /var` every minute:
/var/log/.log-backup_asd MODIFY syslog

PS: i am running debian 9 (with overlayfs and systemd)

I have issues with ASD. I need to use environments like Eclipse and it worked a lot faster when putting both Eclipse, WorkSpace and such in RAM (any other suggestion? I was considering to put more things like the JVM too, but this error happened). But suddenly started to fail.

Mysteriously, now ASD works! But Eclipse gave me this error message...

As you can see in the following screenshot, Eclipse is aware of symlinks used in the environment. Might that be part of the issue?

What about using directory binding or any other way? I found some ASD forks and attempted to merge them (I found their features quite interesting), but I have yet not tested the code and not time for it due to exams.

Whats happening? I have no idea. Can someone help me?

PS: I did a humble quick & dirty unfork from others of your great project. I'm sure it's full of faults (I'm struggling to learn computer programming), but some implemented ideas were interesting. I have no time to test it, just played a bit with the code. I'm sorry for the aberrations (too stupid errors, etc) in the code.
