[Solved]Screen flickering with AMDGPU after kernel update

I'm using the amdgpu driver with a Radeon RX 480. After upgrading the (stock) kernel from 4.11.3-1 to 4.11.6-3, I'm experiencing some flickering issues. These are very slight when idleing but once I do anything with the computer they are so consistent that it becomes basically unusable.

Now, I've read the wiki article on the amdgpu driver and the proposed workaround for frequency issues there does work. But that has the side effect of having to switch performance modes and it stops working when using DPMS. What confuses me too is that that workaround has been there for months and I'm only experiencing this issue now after this upgrade. I also looked at this bug report which is cited on the wiki and the patches which are proposed there to fix this seem to already have been merged.

There are some suspicious lines at the end related to the driver. However, I downgraded the kernel and those are also there when everything's working.

Those patches appear to have been accepted by linus somewhere between 4.12.rc-2 and 4.12.rc-3 .

Unless you can find the specific commits in 4.11.x changelogs, you may have to wait until 4.12 is released.

(or use linux-mainline from aur, it's at 4.12rc-7 now so does have those patches ).


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

I tried to apply those patches to the linux package and it seemed to me that they're already part of the current version. Anyway, I tried installing linux-mainline but the problem remains. So this seems to be related to something else.
