No / very few new posts

Has something changed on forums recently? It looks like forum is not properly tracking my unread posts since a few days.

None of which I am aware.  Unread posts work fine here.   Check your cookie settings.

Re: No / very few new posts

Gave it some time to go away on its own but the "problem" persists.
I did not change anything related to cookies. I think one thing worth mentioning is that third-party cookies are disabled, but that's how it always has been.

It looks like unread post tracking has been changed to session method, earlier it being set to "Full".
Took a screenshot which suggests the same, only three unread topics based on my last visit time (while I'm pretty sure I haven't read most of the below ones either).

Re: No / very few new posts

This forum has always used session-based new post tracking (at least while I have been registered). Perhaps you previously had an extension which prolonged the lifetime of session cookies*? Or an extension which tracked which individual topics you have actually read and made the others appear unread regardless of what the server believed?

* I'm not sure this would even work, I'm pretty sure the server sessions expire after an hour or so of inactivity.

The linked wikipedia page also lists FluxBB as only supporting "session"...

That is a little strange to me because my observation and experience with the forum force me to think otherwise.
Anyway I'd try to figure out what exactly has changed on my side, and thanks for confirming the forum settings.

Re: No / very few new posts

Sorry to bother you like this but I just found this oddity.
My browser was open this whole time and I was checking the forum like every 10-15 minutes. "New posts" were accumulating and then suddenly there are no new posts. This happened because somehow my last visit time has been updated automatically. Don't know whether it should work that way while my session is "active". This led me to think what exactly is the concept of a session?

Logging out has this effect, were you still logged in when this happened ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: No / very few new posts

As I mentioned above, the server-side sessions do expire relatively quickly, though I wouldn't expect them to expire if you were visiting every 10-15 minutes. If your server-side session has expired and you have a remember-me login cookie set, a new session is started when you visit the forums and the last visited time is updated. Any topics that aren't read when your session expires are marked as read, and and any topics that get posted in between the old session expiring and the new session starting are marked as having new posts. This is not new behaviour.

The forum does seem to be loading slower than usual -- I have had a few timeouts and "unable to update online list" errors over the past few hours -- presumably the host is under heavy load at the moment.

Yes. But I think like WorMzy said session is "restarted" anyway on the server and I've set remember me to true.

I am experiencing the same slowness and saw similar errors yesterday. Wanted to report but held back.
Thanks for your explanation and time!

Re: No / very few new posts

My experience has been that if I keep the site open for 20 minutes or so, it "resets" the new posts (last visit time or whatever that is based on). It's always done this. If you want to test that, open the site to see new posts, then just wait 20 minutes (+/-  some small variant). Refresh the site and those posts that were unread will be gone (as if you read them, not deleted) unless they were posted to again.
