[SOLVED] Multiple mounts on my desktop after install won't unmount?

Hey guys!

This is my first post and consequently my first issue. I managed to install arch without any issues and couldn't be happier.

I installed xfce as my Desktop Environment, and I'm having an issue where Filesystem root, boot, home are all mounted and I can't unmount them. This is the first time I've ever had this issue after installing arch and xfce.

Any ideas?

Here is a screenshot of my desktop: https://i.imgur.com/hBp5yDq.png

Well these are partitions you will want to have mounted at all times anyway. And you can't unmount these manually since they are provided by your fstab and mounted in a root context. What is your actual issue here? Do you not want them to be shown on the desktop? You can likely right click and hide them or similar, what's in your fstab?

Yeah I would like to hide them from the desktop (which I'm sure I can figure out) I've just never had a system where each partition is mounted and shown like that.

here is my fstab:

#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system>    <dir>    <type>    <options>    <dump>    <pass>
# /dev/sda3
UUID=dfe2e09e-d958-4fb6-b2eb-dc5f29e4308d    /             ext4          rw,relatime,data=ordered    0 1

# /dev/sda1
UUID=6608-9489          /boot         vfat          rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro    0 2

# /dev/sda4
UUID=3d8c3dfa-e564-4dd6-b095-dfb4db9258f5    /home         ext4          rw,relatime,data=ordered    0 2

# /dev/sda2
UUID=52ef9b14-886c-4814-bde6-edc5c91502e8    none          swap          defaults,discard      0 0

Re: [SOLVED] Multiple mounts on my desktop after install won't unmount?

They're mounted on every "system" that's not windows...

tl;dr - drop the idea to umount those. Fast and hard.

You'll require root permissions to do this, but:
- You *can* unmount /boot after the system is bootet - but if you forget to mount it before an update, your next boot will be no happy day.
- You *can* unmount /home if you're not interested in your $HOME ("~", where all your userdata is stored ...) - your DE will likely stop to work, though.
- If you umount /, ie. the root filesystem, your system will become quite useless altogether.

=> seek a way to filter their display in whatever desktop you're using, unmounting them without a very informed reason (and an immediate remount) is gonna be a painful experience.

Oh it is an issue - you are not (or were not) happy with your current configuration.  Seth was just ensuring that you were using the right terminology in looking for a solution.  If you look up how to unmount partitions, you'll end up with problems.  But if instead you look up how to configure your desktop to hide internal partitions, that's an entirely valid thing to do and you should end up on our wiki that covers that exact question.

If/when this is resolved, please edit your first post to prepend [SOLVED] to the title.

That's true! I've added solved, also I just want to say thanks to you as well. I had another issue that I googled and someone gave the answer, and then you said something a long the lines of "it doesn't matter now, that user hasn't been active for x number of years". Well x years later tongue it helped me.
