pulseaudio server starts but refuses to accept connections.

In my arch system, only the headphone outputs audio.

the notebook speakers are muted.

My first thought was to engage the aptly named `pavucontrol` utility, which gets stuck trying to connect to the pulse server.

with further investigation I narrowed down to these commands that seem reproduce the core problem:

    ~ $ pulseaudio -k && pulseaudio -D -v
    I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup successful.
    ~ $ ps aux |grep pulse
    ninrod    7920  0.0  0.0 199388  6904 ?        S<l  11:11   0:00 pulseaudio -D -v
    ninrod    7921  0.0  0.0  82768  3556 ?        S    11:11   0:00 /usr/lib/pulse/gconf-helper
    ninrod    7945  0.0  0.0  10800  2240 pts/0    S+   11:12   0:00 grep pulse
    ~ $ pactl info
    Connection failure: Connection refused
    pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused
    ~ $

Seems that my pulse server is not allowing connections from `pactl` or any external clients, really.

I've also update my whole system, reinstaled pulse and created ~/.config/pulse with config files copied from /etc/pulse. no success.

What can I do to make it behave again?

here's the output of `pulseaudio -k && pulseaudio -vvvv`:

note: specially interesting are the two first lines of the output:

I: [pulseaudio] main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted

Re: pulseaudio server starts but refuses to accept connections.

Pulseaudio can't access your audio card, something is blocking access to it and so pulse shuts down. Post

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
systemctl --user status pulseaudio

Re: pulseaudio server starts but refuses to accept connections.

Hi V1del, thanks for helping me with this.

I should add that I've succesfully fixed my audio problem by uninstalling pulseaudio and just using the terminal alsamixer app. When I install pulse again, my audio breaks again.

anyway, here are the requested results. First, the fuser result:

~ $ sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/* | xclip
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:  ninrod    F.... pulseaudio
                     ninrod    F.... polybar
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c:   ninrod    F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   ninrod    F...m pulseaudio
~ $

and finally, the systemctl result:

$ systemctl --user status pulseaudio
● pulseaudio.service - Sound Service
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/user/pulseaudio.service; disabled; vendor preset: enabled)
   Active: active (running) since Thu 2017-07-27 14:17:22 -03; 9min ago
 Main PID: 980 (pulseaudio)
   CGroup: /user.slice/user-1000.slice/user@1000.service/pulseaudio.service
           └─980 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no

Re: pulseaudio server starts but refuses to accept connections.

Can you get rid of polybar? And/or install pulseaudio-alsa and see if that resolves this?

Re: pulseaudio server starts but refuses to accept connections.

Hi V1del, thanks again. I proceeded with your suggestion and got rid of polybar as it is as simple as commenting it out on my bspwm configuration. Then I installed pulseaudio + pulseaudio-alsa.

Same error: nothing connects to pulse. I ran out of ideas. maybe a full arch reinstall is in order.

Re: pulseaudio server starts but refuses to accept connections.

That really shouldn't be necessary, it might also be some DBUS issue and something is accessing your audio card before pulse starts and prevents it from properly grabbing the audio device. How do you log in? How do you start X? Can you post

printenv

and your .xinitrc if present? Do you maybe have some systemd service running that is supposed to be running a sound in any shape or form?

Re: pulseaudio server starts but refuses to accept connections.

Ok V1del. My full arch related config is located here at github.
Specifically, the full xinitrc file is right here.

I do not use a login manager. I log in through the stock terminal black screen,
then I'm presented with a bare black console terminal and then I issue the startx command, which starts some things and finally bspwm.

the full bspwm config is here, by the way.

here is the requested result of printenv:

Re: pulseaudio server starts but refuses to accept connections.

v1del, I did this:

echo "blacklist pcspkr" > /etc/modprobe.d/nobeep.conf

do you think this can be related?

Re: pulseaudio server starts but refuses to accept connections.

It shouldn't be related no, it's strange that pulse cannot query your audio device and your printenv and other outputs all look sane, I was hoping to see some redirect of the pulse_server address or similar. Do you have any non default networking options? i.e. disabled ipv6 or similar? although that's a bit of a stretch. Try this:

systemctl --user mask pulseaudio.socket
systemctl --user stop pulseaudio
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
aplay -lL
pulseaudio -vvvv

Post the resulting outputs.
