[SOLVED]Open file waits 20 sec for choose file dialog to appear.

I recently did some upgrade/changes to my arch linux system, changing to use LXQT. The problem may be due to file manager thunar or Caja.

When I click "open" for a file in my editor, it waits 20 sec before the choose file dialog appear. This never happened in the past; it was almost immediate without any delay.

What is causing the problem?

Thanks.

My filesystem is just the usual ones including two usb drives - nothing through the internet.

It happens with medit and geany.  It is the same with my chess xboard gui interface when I try to "load" a game position (20 sec wait). In the past, all response to menu clicks are immediate.

I think the problem began when I installed LXQT replacing LXDE. Problems started after some time when my desktop environment appears for a little second and then replaced with a black screen. I changed to mate and there is now a proper mate desktop. But the waiting 20 secs starts.

what's the output of...

hostnamectl

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

changing to use LXQT

may be due to file manager thunar or Caja

click "open" for a file in my editor

installed LXQT replacing LXDE

changed to mate and there is now a proper mate desktop

We should first figure which environment is actually affected.

Apparently this at least happens with the file dialog of your "editor", so
* start with naming that process.
* try to run it from an interactive shell (xterm) to see whether it prints some errors during the delay

Next, please identify your actual desktop environment, at best a complete "pstree".

For a wild guess: install and run dunst.

Problem cleared.

medit/geany/xboard from shell gives same warning:
Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
    Using the fallback 'C' locale.

I did what is recommended - edit locale.gen, uncomment  english US utf8 and run locale-gen.

Now no more Gtk warning nor the 20 sec delay.

Thanks.
