Can't see Unicode characters anywhere.

Hello,

I just installed a copy of Arch Linux, I am extremely happy with it, but I can't get unicode symbols to work. All I see are Tofu.  I followed the wiki for locale, I have read every single thread related to people experience having trouble with unicode, but I have not been able to solve this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My configuration:

Kernel: 4.11.9-1
Shell: Zsh
Terminal: uxrvt
Window Manager: i3


I can't see unicode in:

  • uxrvt

  • i3 blocks

  • font-manager

I have tried the fonts Symbola and Noto among others.

Starting w/ urxvt and since you're using the powerline fonts: do you use OMZ?
Also best provide a screenshot of the "tofu".

Stock packages. Dead end. (I had hoped for some infinality version lingering around)

Just ftr: I installed <swearing about teenagers here> noto-fonts-emoji and the font selector image you posted is "normal".
=> Does it work if you remove the substitution from the urxvt font list (and reload xrdb, oc.)?

If you did "xrdb -m ~/.Xresources" afterwards, yes.
However, since the previous screenshot is no bug (the font has no human normal glyphs), could you add a screenshot of urxvt as well?

Hack doesn't provide that symbol, it resolves to Deja Vu for me. Same goes for NotoSans or DroidSans.
If that's your problem, install DejaVu.

Ok, I randomly picked up the symbol, so of course it was not part of Hack. (That was not very smart on my part.) But after uninstalling Noto and reinstalling Symbola, everything works now. I need to change the symbols in my i3bar, but aside that all good.
