Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

Hey guys, as the title says, I'm getting disconnections (100% packet loss but still connected) on my Dell XPS 15 9560 (WiFi card: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174).
If I wait long enough (20 minutes approx.) it reconnects on it's own. EDIT: Doesn't seem to reconnect on it's own.
Strangely enough it's doesn't only occur on my WiFi interface: I had the same issues with USB tethering (don't have an Ethernet port).
If I run "sudo netctl stop [profile] && sudo netctl start [profile]" it instantly reconnects, so I thought it was an issue with dhcpcd.
Someone was friendly enough to look into it on IRC, but my logs don't show any sign of dhcpcd disconnecting or having issues at all...

Here's what a disconnection looks like with cnping. Red is packet loss, and black is couldn't send. The black here is me restarting netctl.

$ cnping 8.8.8.8

Image

There's also a lot of strange jitter and spikes when I'm actually getting packets across.

$ cnping 8.8.8.8

Image

I hope this helps. If you need anything else to diagnose feel free to ask.

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

After quick analysis (script testing packet loss) it looks like I'm getting exactly 20 minutes of connection. Huh. The quick reconnection is me running "sudo netctl stop homeb && sudo netctl start homeb".

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

Hey, same issue here, started after the latest kernel and systemd updates. Wifi hangs exactly every 20 minutes (noticed it pretty clearly since I've been streaming video and have the time codes). Never had these issues before today.
It is NOT router related because we have half a dozen device here with wireless connection that do not have any problems.

I've got the same wireless adapter as you.

Couldn't find any other forum post about this for now, sadly.

Interesting, glad I'm not alone with the issue. Can you confirm this is an issue you're also having on all interfaces (i.e. Ethernet or USB tether), because I'm pretty sure my tether was doing the exact same? That's why I was skeptical that the issue was coming from the card itself and not my dhcpcd config or something on top of the kernel/drivers.

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

The fact that it's every 20 minutes consistently, on a laptop, kind of sounds like it's some power saving feature gone wrong. Did you configure,  or are you otherwise running, any power management / power saving software? Also, just for sanity's sake, could you try doing 'rmmod -v ath10k_pci' (you might have to first rmmod other modules it says depend on it) and trying the tether again?

Can you confirm this is an issue you're also having on all interfaces (i.e. Ethernet or USB tether), because I'm pretty sure my tether was doing the exact same? That's why I was skeptical that the issue was coming from the card itself and not my dhcpcd config or something on top of the kernel/drivers.

I'm sorry, I can't test either, the router is too far away for an Ethernet connection and don't have an Android phone right now.

Sorry I should have mentioned but I'm not on a laptop. Rough specs are:
-i5 6600k
-ASUS Z170I Pro Gaming (with integrated wireless)
We do have the Atheros QCA6174 in common.

I don't have any power management on that I can think of right now. I'll try running rmmod when I can,
I switched back to LTS kernel to go around the issue for now, wifi runs fine there.

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

Check this in good and bad condition, re-check the condition after the scan

iw dev wlp4s0 get power_save
sudo iw dev wlp4s0 scan

But if this also affects the tethered phone (ensure to blacklist the ath10k_pci device) the issue will be more up in the stack (but then, the ath10k_pci coincidence seems a bit much "coincidental" ;-)

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

I am getting the same thing. It disconnects ~ 20 minutes, but does reconnect for me,.

I have switched from wicd to NetworkManager hoping it would resolve, but it hasn't.

This happened after I upgraded to the newest kernel. Ended up downgrading.

Here are some logs:

I don't have any power saving software running on Linux, but these Qualcomm WiFi cards are advertised as "Killer Networking" which means they have silly configurations you can do on the Windows side. There's also some driver settings on Windows, maybe that info is saved on the card somewhere and forcing it to shut off after 20 minutes.

Looks like my tethering issues are unrelated... I tried to rmmod ath10k_pci and tether but as it turns out the tethering is awful either way. It doesn't drop every 20 minutes like WiFi does. It just drops whenever it wants.

Well .... ;-)
Try

sudo iw dev wlp2s0 set power_save off

On a sidenote, please replace the embedded huge images with thumbnails/links (board COC - otherwise one of the mods will have for lunch ;-)

Waited 20 minutes, still started dropping 100% of packets.

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

dct93, some more information would be helpful. Could you confirm whether it is *exactly* 20 minutes every time, or just approximately? Do you also have the QCA6174 card? (it looks like some XPS15 have different cards).

Also, kourbou, it looks like from your journalctl the kernel is loading /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-6.bin ("WLAN.RM.4.4-00022-QCARMSWPZ-2 api 6"). Could you try temporarily moving that file away, rebooting, looking in dmesg to confirm it loaded a different firmware correctly (such as /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/firmware-5.bin or /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-4.bin) and seeing whether that has the same issue still?

I ran:

$ sudo mv /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-6.bin /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-6.bin.bak

After reboot:

It looks like it loaded API 4. Seems like it loaded firmware-4.bin. Testing to see if it disconnects now.

30 minutes in, it's looking great! No packet drops so far. Ping is still fluctuating a bit but I figure that's just how WiFi works.

So, what now? Should I report it somewhere? Put the file back to avoid messing with pacman?

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

I just ran pacman and executed the following, same as kourbou

sudo mv /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-6.bin /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-6.bin.bak

and I've lasted an hour without disconnecting.

FWIW

dmesg | grep ath10k_pci

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

Great, looks like "upgraded linux-firmware (20170422.ade8332-1 -> 20170622.7d2c913-1)" in pacman.log is the smoking gun then smile. 2017/06/22 is when they commited the new firmware: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … 0c978a81fc . To be honest, I am not sure about how to report bugs to linux-firmware. Probably your best bet is to email the author (Kalle Valo <kvalo@qca.qualcomm.com>) and commiter (Kyle McMartin <kyle@kernel.org>), and maybe CC linux-firmware@kernel.org, referencing this thread and explaining the issue.

This workaround also works for me. Connected without problems for more than 12 hours now. Thanks GenkiSky for the key piece. This has been a difficult problem to track down and resolve.

Hey, I just wanted to chime in that the above fix has worked for me as well.  I'll try to re-edit this post in a few days time to confirm.

EDIT: Confirmed - no problems at all with WiFi dropping since the change.

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

The recent linux-firmware update (linux-firmware 20170622.7d2c913-1 -> 20170907.a61ac5c-1) does not fix the underlying problem, and the removal of firmware-6.bin is still required (at least for me).

As GenkiSky pointed out in comment #17 upstream should be informed so that the issue can be resolved rather than worked around.  If upstream is not aware of the issue is it surprising that the issue still remains?

Qualcomm has already fixed the issue. See this thread. The fix does not seem to be available in linux-firmware yet.

Re: Disconnections every ~10 minutes (Dell XPS 15 9560 w/ Atheros QCA6174)

I have had the same issue with my Thinkpad E470 and downgraded to linux-firmware 20170422.ade8332-1 to fix the problem temporarily. Let's hope the next update of linux-firmware will solve the problem proper.

Hi,

I just solved it (like you said: upgrading the firmware / not yet available in linux-firmware yet)
