plasmashell crashing

I have an up-to-date system running KDE.
About 3 updates back I noticed that plasma shell was randomly crashing. Running "plasmashell" would restore things until for some unknown reason a few hours later, or a day or two, or some times a week later it will crash again.

Today at the time it crashed I was able to read in the journalctl the following:

Plasmashell seems to be trying to read something at the time it fails:

May 14 16:51:22 dragonfly plasmashell[13238]: No file found for ".xml" , even though update-mime-info said it would exist.
Either it was just removed, or the directory doesn't have executable permission... ("/home/ralvez/.local/share/mime", "/usr/share/mime")

Directory permissions seem to be correct though ... however I do not have an .xml file there (??) should I?

Any one knows how to solve this problem or have any ideas to troubleshoot it?

Thanks.

R.

Re: plasmashell crashing

That's hardly the cause of a crash (segfault) but basically says "i would not know what to do when you click an xml file"

Ensure to have drkonqi installed to get a crash dialog and a backtrace in the second tab. That should provide a better hint on why plasmashell crashes.
The last thing it does s apparently to access some plasma specific pulseaudio daemon (yeah for even more sound complextiy ... )

Re: plasmashell crashing

seth,

Thank you for your reply.

I'm not familiar with drkonqi but I installed it a couple of days back after  you mentioned it.

Today plasmashell crashed again, but drkonqi did not get triggered, which I assumed it would be automagic if a program in the system was to crash.

That's OK, I figured smile I'll go "manual".

The help has two options that seemed relevant given the situation :

--appname <name> <Name> of the program
--pid <pid> The <PID> of the program

I tried :/usr/lib/drkonqi plasmashell as well as the PID of plasmashell but no joy.
Perhaps I'm misreading the meaning of these options?

Thanks.

Yes.

That won't work - it requires a stopped (and probably crashed) process.
You can open konsole and run

echo 0 | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope # this is required to allow the next call
gdb --pid `pidof plasmashell` 2>&1 | tee ~/plasmashell.gdb

after gdb started, the plasmashell process is stopped (it won't react to anything) until you enter

run

in the gdb shell.
Once plasmashell crashes again, gdb will stop it and show you a promt again. Then enter

thread apply all bt

what will print a backtrace of all threads. Ultimately enter

detach
quit

to end gdb. Plasmashell should then automatically restart.

Your gdb session will be logged in ~/plasmashell.gdb

Re: plasmashell crashing

Or you can just run

coredumpctl $id gdb

where $id is the ID of the coredump saved in the last segfault (you can get it from the output of coredumpctl)

Re: plasmashell crashing

Does plasmashell? Even if drkonqi is not installed? (also notice that drkonqi isn't even invoked here, at this point i'm not even sure there's an abort or segfault)

libc.so, QT and seemingly related QT libraries are mentioned but I do not see anything to give a clue about the problem ... then again I have not touched C in 20 + years smile

Re: plasmashell crashing

In connection to using the debugging CLI tool when I run it I get this:

Re: plasmashell crashing

@arojas,

Thanks for  your reply.
I took the id from the crash as you mentioned (Executable: plasmashell PID: 22833 Signal: Aborted (6) Time: 2017-05-18 22:53:47)
and then run the code:

coredumpctl 22833 gdb

It responds with:

Unknown action '22833'

Did I miss something in your explanation?

Re: plasmashell crashing

You're not supposed to run gdb as root, but it doesn't matter since we got a backtrace from drkonqi.

This is https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375860 and reported many times.
Claimed to be plasma5-applets-weather-widget driven.

Re: plasmashell crashing

@seth,

OK. I've removed the weather applet. Hopefully that is the end of the problem in this machine.
The really odd thing is that I have the very same applet in another system I use in the office and I have no problems at all.

It is a better, much newer, system that this ( I built this machine about 12 years ago... yup running well till this day. A bit slow now ) and that may make some difference.
The settings are the same. You would think that if it is a software issue with the same settings both machines should have the same problem... go figure! wink

Thank you for all the help.

Sorry, that should be

coredumpctl gdb $id

instead
