When starting up (or when doing lightdm --test-mode --debug) it always says Failed to find session configuration lightdm-gtk-greeter. However, lightdm-gtk-greeter exists in /usr/share/xgreeters and lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf exists in /etc/lightdm. In addition, greeters-directory=/usr/share/xgreeters in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. Why is this? I've searched exhaustively to no avail
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

Try removing your ~/.dmrc

I did that, that didn't resolve the issue.
