Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Wireless disconnect and heat issue verified fixed on kernel 4.12.4 on my 9360.

Update:  Not fixed. I ran the kernel upgrade on battery, and everything worked until I plugged in the power adapter.

The overheat issue is still there for me. Try this:

pacman -S mesa-demos
vblank_mode=0 glxgears

And then monitor your CPU temperatures with 'sensors'. It goes up to >90°C on my setup because of little fan ventilation.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

There was an article on ultrabookreview about this

http://www.ultrabookreview.com/10395-de … -iris-540/

The cooling system of XPS is not good enough for full loads, and I believe there is still nothing Arch can do about this, Windows users can at leas use XTU to undervolt. But still the only solution is upgrading the cooling system. I've repasted my 9350 as well - and can cofirm that Dell put a huge pile of thermal paste over the CPU. Also thermal rubber between CPU radiator and bottom cover helps a lot - but this mod will make the laptop terribly hot on full loads - so it is a trade-off.

This fixed my wireless disconnects https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=228793  .  Looks like the culprit is the ath10k wifi module.

Update:  Spoke too soon, the second reboot test killed it.  Only kernel 4.11.9 works so far.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Hi Guys, I just got one of these amazing laptops from the company I work for, more concretely the one with Ubuntu, 16GB of RAM and 512 SSD, FHD screen. So far, almost everything works fine, I just had some problems into detecting the live USB from Antergos.

Alongside with the laptop, I was given this USB-C Hub with DP, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, audio, USB3 hub etc., which is not included in the list of supported/unsupported hubs of the Wiki . The list of ports and their working/no working status in my laptop are:

- DP (not tested yet)
- VGA (working)
- HDMI (not tested yet)
- USB3 HUB (working)
- Audio (working)
- USB-C (not tested yet)
- SD-Card Reader (not tested yet)
- Ethernet (not working)

As you may see, from the list of ports I've been able to test, Ethernet is the only one that is not working, which is really a problem for me. It turns out that Ethernet is not even being detected by the system (I think). I have both updated the BIOS and the Thunderbolt firmware to the latest version as described in the wiki:

$ ip link

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00

Additionally, if I try to

modprobe thunderbolt

dmesg reports:

thunderbolt: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.

Finally, dmesg is continuously reporting usb errors:

$ dmesg

Finally, the light next to the Ethernet port is turned on and the corresponding light in the router as well. Does anyone have any hints on what could be happening?

Thanks!

We only support Arch Linux here. You'll have to ask on the Antegros forums.

I assume that means this is an Antergos system.  I cannot fully parse that statement.

WiFi still broken on 4.12.5.  Has anyone reported it upstream?  I feel like it might have more weight coming from a maintainer, rather than just a regular user.  There's no a bug in the arch bugtracker that I could find either, but that might be worth reporting.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

I found out what my wireless disconnect issue is.  The wireless disconnects only happen on my uni network. I did a "journalctl -f" when the uni wireless disconnects happened, and this line appeared

kernel: wlp58s0: Limiting TX power to 30 (30 - 0) dBm as advertised

The uni's specific SSID has around 6 different access points.  After associating to a specific BSSID MAC address for the uni network, wireless worked a lot better.  So, it looks like kernel 4.12 series has some wifi power management settings that listen to the access point routers request to lower TX power that 4.11.9 doesn't?

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

I have the 9360 i7 7600U, 16gb, 512 PCIe FHD model (no touchscreen).

More or less no complaints aside from things already covered here (overheating, wifi disconnects)

I use the TB16 docking station successfully, the only problem is hot-plugging. It does 'work', but when I reconnect it, it will either take 2-3 mins to load everything, or it won't load at all.

Anyone have any ideas how to get TB to hotplug correctly?

----
If you're wondering how to get it to work, I followed the steps here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … e_updates) then disabled Thunderbolt Security in the BIOS settings.

kilbith, the workaround described here seems to be working for me (fingers crossed; it's been a day):

sudo mv /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-6.bin /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-6.bin.bak
sudo reboot

I'm still very happy with mine after some months, Everything works without problems for me, the machine is very fast, battery life of about 10h is more than enough for my case and portability of the device is great. So I can recommend the XPS 13.

Hands down recommend. Although in hindsight I would of got the fhd instead of qhd or should of waited for iris pro to be released.  The xps owners are all pretty much happy here so maybe a more specific question can give you better feedback.

Absolutely. I've had mine since May, and I've had no issues with it, beyond tuning issues that I haven't figured out because I'm lazy.

Oh wait, I just remembered - there is a tiny bit of coil whine, which is a little annoying if I'm in a room that's essentially silent, but if there's even a little bit of ambient noise, I don't notice it.

If you go back a page in this thread, you'll see some people commenting on heat issues, and I think there's a link to a tear down that shows part of the reason is poor application of thermal paste on the CPU. I've had no issues with heat, myself, using my laptop for development, running docker and vagrant boxes to test deployments, and outside of that, the typical web browsing/email/watching Rick and Morty stuff.

I'd recommend it. My only issue was a wi-fi disconnect issue, but since switching to LTS kernel, it's no longer an problem. I suppose I should try the newer kernels (looks like it's been updated 2 or 3 times since I last used it).

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

FYI, I re-pasted.  The mess was almost as bad as the ultrabookreview page posted above.  Running "vblank_mode=0 glxgears"  causes the fan to kick in around 90 *C then it stabilizes at the below readings.  I ran the test for about 5 minutes.  My weak brain muscle memory recall seems to remember pre re-paste settings hovering around upper 80's C.  I am going to try the thermal pads and will then post my results.

sensors
pch_skylake-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:        +72.5°C

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Package id 0:  +82.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0:        +82.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1:        +80.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:        +25.0°C  (crit = +107.0°C)

Update:  Added 2mm thermal pads to cpu heatsink and cpu exhaust heatsink.  The above test took about a minute or two longer to get to 82*C.  My temps with just Chrome and Visual Studio Code running are around 42*C.  Pre thermal pads, running the same two apps were around 55*C.  Looks like around 13-15*C drop in temps when using thermal pads.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

There's a new BIOS version 2.1.0 out, with following changelog:

Fixes & Enhancements
1. Improve the security of chipset
2. Optimize CPU loading to improve EE noise
3. Win10 enterprise support
4. Updated Computrace BIOS persistence module

The CPU loading optimization is be the interesting change here. I'm guessing that by "EE noise" they mean coil whine, which never was a huge issue with my i5 fHD model, so I can't really tell if theres any difference with it.

However, I've noticed the laptop fan is much quieter, and ramps up later than before under system stress. I think this is because the system actually runs a bit cooler, and they didn't just change the fan ramp-up temperature.

YMMV, but I though people with coil whine or heat issues might be interested. I should also note that the BIOS update messed up the "content adaptive brightness control" for me (which doesn't bother me much since I mostly use the laptop with external monitor), but I think you should be able to do a BIOS downgrade if you encounter any issues.

Were you able (or is it possible) to download the bios from dell and via arch? I have access to a few windows laptops, but I'm not an admin on them, so I was unable to prepare a USB disk.

Why would you need windows? Just download the .exe to usb disk or efi boot partition and boot into the bios updater, or use fwupd.

For me, fwupd doesn't seem to work. Updates were scheduled but never executed at reboot time. I may need to investigate the issue. Directly flashing the bios via usb worked like a charm though

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Regarding fingerprint reader, there is one project https://github.com/nmikhailov/Validity90 with goal to make driver for fingerprint reader, unfortunately right now they are not going to support device that is used in XPS 13/15 (138a:0091) because it looks like it has different protocol from other similar devices, but owner of the project asked XPS 13/15 owners to provide our dump of debug data to have ability compare output between each other, it will be nice if we will provide this data, because there is chance that there will be not so many differences in the protocol with other devices and our device will be also supported by this driver.

Here is issue where one of XPS 15 owner already provided such data, I think it should be ok to use same issue also for XPS 13 because fingerprint reader device is same (138a:0091): https://github.com/nmikhailov/Validity90/issues/5
Unfortunately I don't have XPS 13, but I'm waiting for my XPS 15 and will join with my debug data asap, I really want to have possibility to use fingerprint reader with XPS 15.

Hey, wifi issue is resolved really easy. For the 9360 just clone this repo: https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware go into ath10k-firmware/QCA6174 and checksum your local drivers on /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/ against the ones in the repo. Swap the old ones for the newer ones and reboot.

cheers

After updating to bios 2.2.1 I cannot get OPAL to work. I am able to boot from a usb key and turn disk encryption off, but I am not able to make the computer boot with OPAL like before. Anyone else with a similar problem?

I use Arch and everything is up to date, but I don't see that being relevant as it wont even boot. (it just starts diagnostics, as it cannot find any bootable devices)
