[solved] X11 crashes sometimes using Nvidia drivers with 1080ti

Recently set up a new system with a Geforce 1080ti using the official drivers. Mostly it works fine but sometimes X11 just dies suddenly and drops me to the tty. I am able to reproduce this but only on a particular email containing a GIF in a web client. (I can load the GIF normally on a web page, just the email seems to break it.) 

Besides the reproducible crash, I can use the machine for hours without issue, and other causes aren't necessarily reproducible or obvious.

The lines with "nvidia-modeset" look relevant - "Freed GPU" corresponds to each crash.

This looks like a normal shutdown and I have no idea why.

I'm using dwm without any desktop environment or anything; if there's any other logs that would help let me know.

"official drivers" are those from Nvidia webpage or from arch repos?

Viewing it in my timeline does not cause any issues.

I tried disabling hardware acceleration in Chromium. Restarting it caused X11 to crash, and though the setting (not using acceleration) was saved, the tweet still causes it to crash.

Make sure you apply your microcode updates before anything else. Having an old microcode can lead to all sorts of issues and you are currently not applying it.

Repost dmesg if it still happens afterwards.
