[SOLVED] After update, xmonad fails to start

After updating this morning, whenever I startx it loads momentarily then drops back to my login shell, saying it couldn't find a library file - something with a string of characters in the middle of the name and part of xmonad-contrib. Looking around, I found libHSxmonad-contrib-0.13-F6w2BUl1QKWHqJMi0GMBoA-ghc8.2.1.so on my system, but xmonad seems to be looking for a different string between 0.13- and -ghc8.2.1.
Is it safe to rename this file? And why is it necessary to have this string in the name of this .so?

Re: [SOLVED] After update, xmonad fails to start

My initial reaction is no, it is not safe to rename that file.
My second reaction would be, what package owns that file?
Please post your /var/log/pacman.log (inside of BBCode code tags, if you please)

A lot of warnings that none of the documentation is where it's expected to be, a few complaints that certain dependencies have yet to be generated (because the package from which that dependency is built is being built next).

Re: [SOLVED] After update, xmonad fails to start

Okay, that is all new to me hmm  My first step would be to try reinstalling  xmonad-contrib.

Re: [SOLVED] After update, xmonad fails to start

Shouldn't you recompile xmonad after installing the updates to link against the new library?

Re: [SOLVED] After update, xmonad fails to start

Raynman - xmonad is the last thing to be upgraded, after everything else has been built. (Edit - You're right, I had forgotten that recompiling xmonad was separate from installing it)

ewaller - I've reinstalled xmonad-contrib and xmonad (separately and together) to no avail.

You seem to be missing the single most important part of this whole affair. What is the actual error message? The Linux dynamic loader gives you a free diagnostic which includes both the name of the broken executable and the *exact* library it couldn't find -- take advantage of this free debugging tool and use it!

The precise name of what you don't need is much less useful information. sad

...

Whatever it is, it will be some binary that depends on xmonad-contrib, which nothing in the repos does, and which links against the old version of xmonad-contrib.
As I understand it, haskell libraries are super-unstable and change the ABI with every compiler version and source code change, and for all I know every compiler run too -- so they append a hash to the library soname in order to make sure you don't accidentally try to load an incompatible version. Ordinary soname versions don't quite cut it in this case....

Re: [SOLVED] After update, xmonad fails to start

Looking through logs in /var/log/, the Xorg log file hasn't seen a write since Oct 2015 for some reason. Running journalctl after a failed attempt at startx gives

The exact error message I get when xmonad fails to start seems to be cut off, because the only part that is readable says it fails to find libHSxmonad-contrib-0.13-LqA4dLENpK1ERuUS0s1ZBX-ghc8.0.2.so (no such file or directory) - I gave the exact name of the file that I "don't need" because that's the version of the file from the latest version of xmonad-contrib, leading me to believe that it should be using this other version and not the one compiled against the previous version of ghc. xmonad-contrib is (to my knowledge) being called when xmonad reads my xmonad.hs file.

EDIT: Never mind, I'm an imbecile who forgot to

xmonad --recompile

after the update. ;_;

Re: [SOLVED] After update, xmonad fails to start

Depending on how you start X, the log will either be in your journal (if you use a display manager) , or in ~/.local/share/xorg if you use startx or xinit.
