Hey guys,
longer story here:
I was using Lightdm with Gnome and switched to GDM a couple of days ago. This was where some things started to act weird.
I was using this script here to switch between apps. [1] It basically uses wmctrl to start or switch to an app.
This worked very fine for the gnome-terminal before.
Now being in a gnome-terminal an running wmctrl -l the gnome-terminal does not appear in the list anymore.
Other things like xprop|grep WM_CLASS are also not working with gnome-terminal anymore.
Any idea how to trail down this bug?
Has this to do with Wayland?

Very likely, if you aren't explicitly loading up GNOME on Xorg GDM will default to start Wayland.

Since this is the newbie corner... How do I tell GDM to start Xorg instead of Wayland?

By selecting X from the session icon. This is usually a cog but it depends on your GDM theme
