ALC1220 front panel audio routed through speakers

I don't use headphones often, and I've recently upgraded to a ryzen 1700 and Aorus ax370-gaming 5. Apparently, it has a 'dual' ALC 1120 audio chipset (according to this anyway: http://www.gigabyte.us/Motherboard/GA-A … -rev-10#kf ).

When I plug in earphones into the front panel audio I can see in alsamixer that the set of options changes and 'headphone' is unmuted, (whereas when unplugged it's normally muted). The odd behaviour is that the audio is still routed through my normal speakers, plugged into the rear panel. No amount of fiddling in alsamixer while the headphones are plugged in can get any audio out of it, altering the audio level (while the headphones are plugged in) causes the speaker volume to change. I have tried with multiple headsets.

EDIT: Second to last line should read 'alterting the audio level OF HEADPHONES (while headphones are plugged in) causes the back speaker volume to change.
here is some relevant output:

I have the same issue with the same board... is there any solution for this issue?
