GRUB hold shift to show menu, not working

I have tried with what is described in the GRUB Tips and trix wiki as well as the holdshift AUR package.

Neither of these work for me, I am guessing that the issue might be that my laptop keyboard is not compatible with the keystatus/keypress event, as mentioned in the GRUB tips and trix wiki note.

Can I somehow check if this is indeed the case?

As a workaround I currently have the grub menu set at 1 second, since moving with the arrow keys kills the time counter, so that I can use the menu if needed. But since I don't actually need it, single booting and do not really swap kernels, I would really like to hide it.
But not permanently, if I might need it for some reason, to boot another kernel, if the current breaks or what not.

Any insight into this would be appreciated. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks!

Re: GRUB hold shift to show menu, not working

I have been ripping my hair trying to figure out how to make this happen without keystatus or how to make keystatus work for me, but I just can't.

Is there no one here that have run in to this issue?

For me it works to spam the Esc key.
